Bella Vita - Spritz IPA
This beer is a hoppy, fruit forward, and intensely orange IPA. The neutral yeast lets the orange flavours shine, while leaving a slight sweetness that balances the acidity of the Orange Juice Concentrate and bitterness of the Orange Peel.

Orange, citrus, tropical, candy, pine.

Orange-flavoured IPA inspired by the Italian "Spritz" cocktail, created by Brussels Beer Project; bought in a supermarket somewhere a while ago, now sampling at three months after it was canned. Medium thick, snow white, irregular, lightly lacing, slowly diminishing head over an initially clear, warm apricot-tinged golden robe with lively visible sparkling, misty and deeper orangey gold in the end. Aroma indeed reminiscent of Aperol Spritz, next to hints of 'fake' orange peel, orange-flavoured children's vitamins I remember from childhood, melon, minerals, Moscato d'Asti, vague accents of green tea, damp earth, Fanta Pink Grapefruit, dried out and crumbled brioche, old biscuit, straw. Flavoured onset: the orange juice concentrate piercing through an indeed very clean, smooth profile of slick cereally pale maltiness with little fruity ester activity, side notes of melon and lychee but in a volatile way, minerally carb - or dare I say 'spritzy' - all leading up to an unexpectedly bitter finish, tonic water-like, or indeed reminiscent of Italian bitter liqueur (amaro), though perhaps still a notch softer than that. There is hop bitterness to it, sure, but most of this 'ending', drying bitterness is established by that added orange flavouring - like biting in an orange peel, but more artificial, if you get my drift; flashes of orangey sweetness keep piercing through, though, so this bitterness, however powerful, is not all-consuming. Bittersweet cocktails still enjoy great popularity - especially in summer, which is probably why this is not 'my beer': I generally dislike bitter liqueur, and I am having this on a chilly March night rather than a warm summer outdoors café. As an Italian style cocktail in beer form, in itself an original concept, this is actually quite well done, I think my girlfriend - who is quite fond of Negroni, Aperol Spritz and the like - would probably like this a lot. For me personally a bit too gimmicky, not to the extent where it loses its 'beeriness', but not very convincing in either malts or hops either. Interesting idea executed interestingly, I must admit, just not my personal cup of tea, I am afraid.

Can picked up from BBP Dansaert, Brussels. Had this 26th February 2026 at Isobel's, Spond, Herefordshire whilst making Pizza, well Loz is making it I am just assisting. Pours hazy orange with a white head. Soft mouthfeel, juicy, fruity with big nods to orange and perhaps other citrus. Bitter, in fact streaky bitterness, finish is drying. Score 6.8, okay I am being a bit harsh upping this to a score of 7.0
