This recipe was made in the spirit of experimentation and a shared passion for unique ingredients between Upland brewer Clay Steenbergen and Big Lug Brewing Company’s head brewer, Tyler Chippas. This beer is inspired by brewing traditions which predate the popularization of hops, when flavor and aroma were pulled from a wider mix of herbs, spices, and other ingredients. Most importantly, we made it because it’s fun! Lemongrass lends a citrus and woodsy aroma, which is bolstered by galangal (a cousin of ginger root) whose flavor is expressed with earthy pine, citrus, warming spice, and floral notes. Ginger adds a touch of brightness and reinforces the warmth of the galangal.
