The story of Lupu-Luau began when Sam was hanging outside with co-workers during an overly-sunny day. One present co-worker in particular was lacking heavily in the melanin department, to put it lightly. A friendly joke about a total tan aversion led to this legendary comment, “You can say it, Sam, I’m pale as f**k.” The brewer in Sam thought that would make a cool name for a super pale beer. From there the wheels started turning and the iterative R&D process began.

Sam set out to make a hazy, overly pale beer but the test batches weren’t quite there yet. However, during that process he found out how great coconuts work in an IPA and decided that the new goal was to make an IPA using as much coconut as possible. We started with a combination of Pils malt with flaked barley, rolled oats, and malted and raw wheat to get it all hazy. Then we introduced coconuts three ways by adding toasted coconut, dehydrated coconut water and an experimental hop variety that provides a unique coconut & woody aroma.

The result? A lupulin-loaded, coconut-centric ale. Our Lupu-Luau IPA!

Tap at patricks pub. Pale yellow, mildly sweet perfume nose. Not as bitter as expected. Actually quite medium mild. More like a well behaved APA, probably fresh er somethin. No lie. Yes, better than expected, odd. but still not good.

Pour is a hazy yellow with a large white head and lots of floaties. Aroma is some kind of citrus fruit with melon. I did not get any coconut. Flavor is more of the coconut, not a huge amount it's just barley there, with some pineapple in there. It starts out super sweet but then goes to super bitter in a second which is kind of odd. This is something I'm not ever going to need again. Not enough hops or coconut but plenty sweet and bitter.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours gold with a white head. Aroma is sort of coconut citrus - maybe. Med body. Flavor is rather strongly coconut with a pinch of citrus. Hoppy enough. Not enough barley malt support to make this work well for me. Bitter enough. But ... I'm tempted to make a statement about DH, but I'll refrain.

Sample at Daily Growler UA. Hazy straw-gold color with a medium white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Strings of lacing. Aroma of tropical fruit, coconut and hops. Medium body with flavors of floral hops, pineapple, coconut and malt. The finish is fruity with a mild hop and coconut aftertaste. Decent overall.

12 ounce bottle. Nice coming up with a lily-white beer! Hanging with the alt-right now, Sam? Fuck you, courtesy of #Charlottesville. But I’m not an attention whore like you so I’ll just rate this thing fairly. After all, I did buy this for some reason. Hazy orange, thin creamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of coconut, citrus, pale malt. The taste is coconut, coconut creme, pale malt, citrus. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness. A coconut bomb. Shocking! Thanks, Sam, you self-righteous prick.

Draft at Cork City. Clear, heavy lace coats the glass. Coconut over citrus. Really drinkable. Interesting mouthfeel. They did a good job of making a coconut forward IPA, but I would not want a lot of it, so it’s good and bad.
