The story of Lupu-Luau began when Sam was hanging outside with co-workers during an overly-sunny day. One present co-worker in particular was lacking heavily in the melanin department, to put it lightly. A friendly joke about a total tan aversion led to this legendary comment, “You can say it, Sam, I’m pale as f**k.” The brewer in Sam thought that would make a cool name for a super pale beer. From there the wheels started turning and the iterative R&D process began.

Sam set out to make a hazy, overly pale beer but the test batches weren’t quite there yet. However, during that process he found out how great coconuts work in an IPA and decided that the new goal was to make an IPA using as much coconut as possible. We started with a combination of Pils malt with flaked barley, rolled oats, and malted and raw wheat to get it all hazy. Then we introduced coconuts three ways by adding toasted coconut, dehydrated coconut water and an experimental hop variety that provides a unique coconut & woody aroma.

The result? A lupulin-loaded, coconut-centric ale. Our Lupu-Luau IPA!

12 oz can poured. A plain, clear, pale golden pour with tons of rocky foam head. Aroma is gentle, with what seems like a strange fruitiness over an earthy malt. High carb, taste is a little sharp. This has a sweetness to it that I can't shake. It doesn't really taste like coconut to me. Coconut water for sure, but I'll take the actual coconut over the water any day. Candy like sweetness. Maybe if I liked coconut water more, I'd enjoy this IPA more. I guess I didn't really know what I was getting myself into.

Can, from Malt & Mold. Pours cloudy pale yellow with small creamy whitish head, citrus peel aroma, adequate carbonation, medium bitter citrus peel taste with coconut flavor, slight sweetness, thin body, long finish with faint coconut aftertaste. It felt a strange mix of flavors.

On tap at Hughies. Pours a cloudy yellow with medium frothy white head that lasts. The aroma is cocoa, wheat, oat. Slick body, wheat, coconut, citrus, light bitterness, very good.

Can. A- Coconut water, subtle grass, mild funk, subtle lime. A- Gold color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Coconut, slightly grassy, mild vanilla, rum, lime. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- Interesting drink and I do like the concept and idea. Coconut dominates all aspects yet it remains light enough it doesn't ruin the beer. Very tropical. No bitterness. Almost like a moscow mule meets pina colada in the cocktail world. Weird but alright.

Can from AJ’s. Tropical fruit nose, pineapple, mango, coconut, orange juice. coconut is in control. I get more pineapple for sure. Hazy, bright gold with a low, airy head. Very fruity, slightly too sweet, coconut and pineapple, mango, orange. Pretty lively hops work well with the coconut. Pretty nice overall, not brilliant, and probably couldn’t dirnk a ton of it, but enjoyable.

Can, courtesy of DerA. Pours unclear golden. Aroma is strong malts, tropical fruit, mango, coconut indeed. Body is heavy, sweet and juicy, lively carbonation, still fruity and very oily, but almost no coconut. Basically a fat oily IPA.

12 oz. can. Pours hazy yellow with a white head. Aroma of tropical fruit and subtle coconut. Taste is tropical fruit, citrus, and lots of coconut, probably too much coconut for my taste. Okay.
