L’Ultima Luna is aged in Amarone barrels, filled only for 2/3 of their volume to favor the oxidation of beer with air (a tribute to the oxidized wines of Andalusia). The beer ages at least 24 months, up to 48 months. For the 11th years of the Brewery a special edition of 60 months has been produced. What fascinates in this beer is the exceptional complexity of tertiary aromas due to oxidation (leather, Madeira, dried fruit, cocoa, wood, toasted almond).

Bottle shared at Chriso’s post GBBF minidig, 16/08/14. Aroma is nice mellow caramel, nutty, some hot alcohol, cognac barrel. Ruby red / caramel coloured pour with a low off white head. Flavour is composed of liquorice, caramel and nutty, smooth caramel, nutmeg. Palate is viscous, warming alcohol, solvent. A bit rough round the edges.but pretty mellow.

Bottle shared at Chriso’s post GBBF minidig, 16/08/14 from Domus Birrae. Lightly hazed chestnut brown with no head. Nose is nutty, dark toffee vibes, brown sugars, big walnut whip presence, spice, light chocolate. Taste comprises big sherry notes, booze, oaky, more of that walnut whippage effect, figs, dates. Full bodied, soft carbonation, light warming alcohol in the close. Nice slightly aged barley wine, mellow and tasty.

Another brilliant barley wine from my favorite Italian brewery, matured on red wine barrels. Thin beige head, misty bronze robe. Very complex, appetizing, perfumed and tempting aroma of caramel, sweet red wine, jute, sweet tobacco, raisins, medium dry sherry, soy sauce, black pepper, candied cherries. Sweet caramel taste, candied fruits, complex smoky and woody accents, oily mouthfeel with lots of body, made lighter by a sourish touch, tannins, liqueurish warm finish without any astringency. I’m a sucker for complex barley wines and this is one of the best I ever had. What a marvellous beer this was!

Bottle - Vintage 2012 - Vinous and barrel notes, plum and some booze. Hazy copper with no head. Vinous and big oak notes. Body is a bit thin. This has picked up so much of the barrel that it no longer resembles a Barleywine.

Murky red - brown beer, no head. Palate is light and softish and a touch viscous. No carbonation! Mellow gueuzey sourness kicks off but is soon joined by a nice tangy red wine steak. Good red wine berry fruits. The two elements come together very well in to a light smooth finish. Does a good job of hiding the abv.

Botella de 33 cl. en el Lúpulo Feroz en el mes de octubre de 2013. Alucinante cerveza con gran carácter en el que predominan las maderas del barril y el fuerte alcohol. De casi ninguna espuma se asemeja mas a un licor que a una cerveza. Me guardo una botella para para disfrutar mas adelante de esta maravilla y compleja cerveza.

Aroma is rather vinous with a tart fruit aroma. Moderately strong red wine notes with some light tannins. Smells acidic with some tart cherries and berries. Aroma reminds me of a Flanders Oud Bruin. Pours a flat murky brown, lighter on the edges. Absolutely no head which isn’t surprising as their was no hiss when I opened the bottle. Obviously no lacing and surprisingly no legs either. Flavor starts off a little sweet without much character. Mid palate I get a lot of caramel, light toffee and some cherries. Finish has a medium light acidity with some cherries and berries. Medium oak character with a light roast note in the finish as well. Light red wine notes. Some alcohol spice in the end. Lingering light acidity along with some caramel and a wet cardboard oxidative note. Mouthfeel is medium full to full bodied with no carbonation. Low acidic astringency with medium low alcohol warmth. Overall not a very enjoyable barleywine. I cannot tell where the acidity enters this beer, but its there and not a good combination for the barleywine character. The lack of carbonation and oxidation don’t help either. Really not sure what the intended product was.

(Draught at Beer Temple, Amsterdam, 24 July 2013) Deep red colour with brief, off-white head. Fruity, vinous nose with red berries, oak wood, glue and strong wine aromas. Fruity, malty taste with notes of Madeira, sherry, caramel, glue and a sweet and vinous finish. Full body, with a slightly oily texture. Very sweet, with low bitterness. Interesting and quite tasty, but a touch too sweet. Quite nice though.

On tap @ Beer Temple (Del Ducato tap takeover). Murky brown color. No head. Aroma’s: sherry, booze, vinous, grapes, cardboard. Somewhat alocholic & sweet retronasal. Flavor is light sweet, sherry, a touch of salt. Medium bodied. Long finish, tart. Very interesting, but hardly beer anymore. Worth the try.
