L’Ultima Luna is aged in Amarone barrels, filled only for 2/3 of their volume to favor the oxidation of beer with air (a tribute to the oxidized wines of Andalusia). The beer ages at least 24 months, up to 48 months. For the 11th years of the Brewery a special edition of 60 months has been produced. What fascinates in this beer is the exceptional complexity of tertiary aromas due to oxidation (leather, Madeira, dried fruit, cocoa, wood, toasted almond).

Bottle from Lortica, Bologna; bb 2050, batch L175 09, 3 years old
Dark brown color with a few sparse big bubbles. Very nice aroma: raisins, wood, malt, caramel, with a touch of spices; it reminds me of Poltorak meads. Almost no carbonation, the mouthfeel is therefore a bit oily; caramel flavor, with an unfortunate dusty character; the sweetness is very moderate; it has a too strong oxidization, that spoils the flavor; tobacco; ordinary bitterness; the alcohol content is well hidden. The flavor profile is quite a mess, but it improves with some oxygenation.
Goes from fantastic aroma to good flavor, but it would be nice to try again.

A hazed dark brown barley wine with floaties and no head. In aroma, a smooth sweet vinous malt with smooth vanilla beans, licorice, pinot de charente, very nice. In mouth, a sweet candy malt with light sour cherries and tobacco leaves, molasses, soy sauce, and burned caramel, rather nice and corky. Loads of alcohol warmth. Bieropholie import.

Bottle, thanks to Reakt. It pours deep red, with a thin yellow-white head. The nose is vanilla, oak, sherry and toffee. The taste is brown sugar, oak, honey, tinned fruit, alcohol warmth, vanilla, fresh coconut and some cocoa, finishing sweet. Full body and low carbonation. Alcohol is pretty well hidden. Decent.

Bottle at The Kernel during Thomas’s Birthday Party, London. Pours lightly cloudy ruby with a fine, bubbly head. Sweet caramel and toffee aroma, some cherries and light wood. Very sweet flavor, more caramel, some bourbon, honey, wood, vanilla. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warm, sticky sweet finish, some caramel and vanilla, light wood, coconut, toffee, toast. Drinks well given the ABV. Very nice beer. Big.

Bottle. Dark brown/orange with tiny tan head. Aroma malt, dark fruit, caramel, toffee and strong oak. Flavour is malt, caramel, fruit, vinous, sweet, strong oak, tiny bit sour, toffee and notes of alcohol.
