Wassail gets its name from the Old-English term "waes hael", meaning "be well". A traditional old-style Ale, somewhat resembling an extra special bitter, with the addition of seasonal spices in a deep ruby colour.

Made with Maris Otter malt and a combination of darker "Crystal" malts, this ale has a rich and complex malt base with undertones of biscuit and caramel giving way to dark fruits, honey and slight notes of dark chocolate. The hops deliver spice and citrus which alongside the cloves, vanilla and star anise result in a punchy bitter ale with strong notes of sultanas, biscuits and winter fruits.

Found this one on a visit to the extensive ruins of the Cistercian Furness Abbey. I believe the beer has been around a while in name, but has changed brewer a few times. A clear brown colour with a sweet dark-maltiness in taste, with a more genuine dark-malty aroma. Certainly traditional, very good bottle-conditioning here.
