We have a saying around the brewery: “Pluck a thorn from the paw of a lion and you’ll have a companion for years.” We took a recipe that could have been aggressive and made it smooth. Even with its intense copper color and a distinct maltiness, you might be surprised when something that roars so loudly is tame enough to be your new sidekick lager.

12 ounce can from Brookings SD Liquor, 8/10/20. Clear copper, large frothy tan head, good retention. Aroma of toasted malt, bitter hoppiness. Kinda undefined. Taste is toast, caramel, cherry, tinny hops/ Medium bodied, high carb, moderate bitterness. Drink by 28 Nov 20, so its not out of date. Just needs work.

12oz can. Opens with a sketchy loud pop. Mega foamy head. Yeah..infection city. Really, this was the last beer I wanted to have tonight, and now it is destined for drainpour. Gross aroma. Just a way off amber lager I guess. The kind of crap that makes BMC not worry. Bad.

Literally my nose stopped working or this has no aroma at all. Flavor almost follows suit. Really not a thing I can say about this one.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 12/7/2016. Pours slightly hazy medium orange/amber/light copper color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lemon, cracker, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of bready malts and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. A bit fruity/yeasty, but not overwhelming. Taste of cracker, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, and herbal/floral earthiness. Light herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, and herbal/floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of bready malts and light earthy hop notes; with a good malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Fairly clean on lager flavors, with slight yeasty notes present. Slightly drying from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, bready/grainy, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.6%. Overall this is a very good Vienna lager style. All around good robustness and balance of bready malts and light earthy hop notes; very smooth and easy to drink. Nice clean and rich malt flavors for the low ABV, with just enough hops to balance the sweetness. A very enjoyable offering.
