A sly grin says that Mankato Brewery’s Crooked Rook has something up it’s sleeve. The flavors of bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and caramel conspire with the hops’ floral and woody notes, making this beer one cheeky little devil.

Draft at Sickies Fargo. Almost opaque maroon color. Fruity coffee aroma. Taste is earthy licorice stewed prune candy. Interesting.

Bottle: Nearly black with a short, chunky, oatmeal head. Slightly smoky dark chocolate scent. Chocolate malt, vanilla, sugared-black coffee taste....a bit of earthy bitter. Nice and rich....really enjoyable.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 2/10/2017. Pours clear nearly opaque dark brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, dark bread, light nuttiness/smoke, herbal, floral, wood, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Slight yeast fruitiness as well. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, dark bread, light nuttiness/smoke, herbal, floral, wood, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, dark bread, herbal, floral, wood, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from hop/roast bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.6%. Overall this is a very nice American porter. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Great malt complexity with nice supporting hop flavors; without being too roasty, bitter, or drying. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Coffee, chocolate malt, and hay aroma. Black with small tan head. Moderately sweet chocolate syrup, coffee, malt and mildly bitter hay flavor. Good body. Decent.

Tap at the brewery. Black of course. Very heavy roast and aome coffee and dark choco, and this is also very sweet for the style. Lots of sugar, lactose possibly, at least.that is what it tastes like to me.

Bottle. Pours near black with a light brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has rich roasted malts and dark grains with a bit of wood and some coffee underlying. Flavor combines roasted malts, coffee and dark grains with a touch of earthiness backing.
