Chocolate Raspberry Porter

The Winnower removes the husk of the bean from the cocoa nib and opens the door for flavor collaboration. This sweet and slightly tart porter is loaded with 1200 pounds of fresh raspberry and 300 pounds of French Broad Chocolates’ Nicaraguan cocoa nibs to replicate some of our favorite Belgian confections. Medium bodied and packed with flavor Winnower is an amuse-bouche to your drinking day.

Stiff, tart raspberry porter, lots of bitter chocolate and even more berries, with a dry and cocoa-forward profile but roasted to the point of almost coming across burnt. Ripe raspberry is on the forefront, but seems not to mesh all that well with the deep, dark java bitterness. Some anise and nutty undertones, but mainly an onslaught of berries and scorched chocolate. Overcarbonated texture doesn’t help. Pretty pour, though, and the nose presents a much more restrained beer than what we get. Not my favorite.

Tall can. Black with a tan head. Aroma of raspberry syrup. The flavor has more raspberry with a touch of dark chocolate. The sweetness is tempered by the roast bitterness a bit.

Can at home. Fine dark pour. Nose is lighter cocoa and raspberry syrup. Tastes of lighter chocolates, raspberry, cherry, cola, some chalkiness. Ok something just doesn’t sing to me here.

Decadent porter indeed, like the menu says. Black pour with ok head and lacing. Some raspberry and chocolate. Light tangy finish with some bitter. Tap at brewery.

Sample at the taproom. Brown-black color with a medium foamy beige head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and berries. Medium body with flavors of roast malt, raspberries and chocolate. The finish is chocolate malt and mildly tart raspberry. Pretty good all around.
