Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the sour styles.

On tap at Lompoc. Pours a purple color with a small white head. A big woody sour fruit nose. The flavor is light sweet berries, oak, sourness, sawdust. A pretty mellow beer, but quite good. Very sour at times but not acidic.

On tap at lompoc side bar Portland. Pours out a dark purple reddish. Nose is lots of berries and a great funk. Taste is more of the berries and plenty of funk. Lots of barrel notes.

Keg at the Little Italy taproom, 12/11/14. Clear claret with no head. Nose is tangy berries, sweet notes with a little sourness, tartened blackberries. Taste comprises tangy blackberry, straw, subtle acidity, red berry sours. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a gentle puckering effect. Decent enough ’Linner, would have preferred it tuned up a little more in a sharper more acidic sense.

Draft at Sour’ed in September. Pours raspberry with pink head. Nose/taste of super fresh blackberries, wheat and light lactose. More New Glarus fruit beer than berliner weisse. Awesome stuff. Medium body.

Hand bottle with huge thanks to gorditoabd. Pours a lovely red color with a big soap sudsy head and sour and fruity aromas. Favor is a delightfully simple mix of berry patch and sourness... I wouldn’t accuse this beer of being overly complex, but it’s damn good. Mouthfeel was a bit chalky at first, but it seems to have fixed itself and is just plain nice now.

Draught Pink bubbles over gorgeous cardinal/Bordeaux red beer. Pure freshly picked brambles, but little else. Some taster say cedar. Rather thin, if nice, fruitflavour, again clearly blackberry. Tart finish. Dry, very dry, if a bit thinnish body. Nice... the AKA name, however is nonsensical, it is about as much lambic as Belle-Vue is, these days.

Tap at the Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours reddish black (or purple?) with a slight pinkish head. Aroma of tart/sour berry - but some sweet aroma too. Near med body. Flavor is more tart than sour. Very berry. Goes quite astringent eventually. Tasty. Adventure: Mixed some 50/50 with the Berryessa Whippersnapper. Chocolate and blackberry = good!
