Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the sour styles.

On tap @ Rattle N Hum. This one's a crystal clear blood/beet red one with a small scattered pinkish head. Smells really good and sour. Soft raspberries, blackberries, sour blackcurrants and some red currants. Really fruity and nice this aroma. Tastes really good and fruity also. It's soft thin oily on the texture and just above average on the carbonation. Really refreshing without being too sour this. Loaded with fruity blueberries, red currants and blackberries. Mmhhh.. A lovely tartness and a hefty Berry presence. Nice! 11.06.2015

On tap at Ballast Point - Scripps Ranch, pours a cloudy pinkish amber with a small white head. Aroma brings out deep tart blackberry pie, light wild character and jam. Flavour is very jammy, with tart blackberry jam, some fruit pie and a bone dry pithy quality. Wonderfully constructed, with a lingering jammy character. Really nice.

Decent Berlinner Weisse, thankfully on the dry side, accentuating the blackberry tartness without dipping into jelly sweetness. Finishes sour but mellow, yet the berries cling to the palate for a good long while.

Listed simply as Ballast Point Sour Wench. Draft pour pint at Special Brews. Was unsure on the variation, until the first sio, then it was obvious. Pours an almost purple color with a thin bubbly head. Sour red grape, and mixed berry aroma. Flavor closely matches. Sour wheat finish. A little on the strong side. I’m suprised. Does not have any different feel than the typical sub 5% berliner. Thick body, full flavor. Quite tasty.
