South Pacific Pale Ale
Kipling was the first UK beer to use the exquisite Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zealand. We brew this as a SMASH (Single Malt and Single Hop) using the heritage Maris Otter as a base malt which works to allow the complex flavour of this hop to really shine through. There is a grassy, grapefruit character on the nose, followed by passionfruit and mango. It finishes with a balanced and thirst-quenching bitterness.

Draft. I ordered this without knowing anything about it. I was delightfully surprised! Pours clear golden yellow with a foamy white head. Lots of carbonation. Nearly looks like you could sit a penny of the foam without it sinking. ( I didn’t try) Nose is fresh cut grassy with a huge fruit element. Big flavors of passion fruit, gooseberry and I guess the kiwi fruit. Although wouldn’t have thought kiwi without reading it first. Palate starts mildly sweet from the fruit and malt but transitions to a nice dry bitterness. This was packed with more flavors then I was expecting. If I had someone to drive me home, I would have ordered a few more pints. Real tasty. The best English beer I have sampled in recent memory. I would never turn this down on draft or cask.

Second Thornbridge beer from the LCBO. Pours a clean golden colour with a big frothy white head that stays a while and gives out decent lace. Pine needles and sweet grapefruit aromas. The taste is quite milder though, as in the hop are more tame. Kind of a smooth mouthfeel, medium-bodied. Citrusy flavours (orange, grapefruit) with some light grain. Funny to see an English brewery make an American Pale Ale. Pretty good though.

Aroma is rather strong on hops with lots of gooseberry bush and hints of nettles. Flavour is rather hoppy with gooseberry bush, some nettles and hints of biscuits. Too much gooseberry bush here.

Smell is hoppy and a little metallic. Theres a light fruit taste but not as strong as jaipur, which was a much better beer. Pours clear bubbly golden with bleached froth. Taste has straw, some bitterness but not much fruit. More than anything else I notice the straw. Decent, but not quite qorth the lcbo price at 5 bucks for a half litre.

(500mL bottle from the LCBO) Poured cool, a pale golden orange with an inch of fluffy head leaving some lacing. Aroma from the Nelson Sauvin is fantastic, cut grass, tropical fruit (esp. kiwi), melon, peach, bit of citrus, herbs, with some pale malt lurking beneath. Flavour doesn’t quite match the nose, cereal grains and citrus pith the predominant flavours, with a bit of sweet fruity malt/hops in there too. Interesting progression, starting a bit bitter, then revealing some sweetness, and finishing fairly dry with lemon zest and pepper, more astringent, and (echoing others) tangy, than your typical IPA/APA. Palate is over-carbed, particularly initially, and a little light but consequently refreshing. A good use of the hop aromatics!

50cl bottle. Pours a beautiful, lemon gold with steady bubbles and a generous head. The nose has pine and very dry lemon pith. The taste has more of the lemon pith and some grapefruit. The palate is light to medium bodied with a long dry finish which really starts in the middle section. Overall, a nice zingy, pale ale which could become a bit over-drying was I not enjoying this on a sunny day in the garden.

Bottle: Poured a hazy yellowish color ale with a nice pure white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of fruity and floral hops with light grassy notes is very enticing. Taste is dominated by the grassy, fruity and floral notes form the hops with almost no bitterness notes and a solid malt backbone with well balanced sweetness that doesn’t detract from the hops. Body is quite full with great carbonation. Very well brewed with just the right amount of Nelson Sauvin hops to procure maximum enjoyment of this beer.

Bottle - Bready aroma with some hoppy floral notes, very nice. Wonderful clear gold with nice head. Very neutral taste, overwhelmed by a short bitterness that dissipates quickly. Clear and refreshing, but not complex in taste. A great transition beer for the uninitiated.
