Many of the hundred year old small breweries in Bohemia produce Pilsner lager, but they don't dare call it a Pilsner, as there is only one of those in the world. They call theirs "Světlý Ležák" or pale lager, and often leave them completely unfiltered. This beer is our first attempt at duplicating the flavors we experience when visiting, except that we refuse to use Saaz hops (too earthy). Instead, we used Riwaka, the daughter of Saaz and Nugget, grown in New Zealand. This gives some of the name noble qualities but also has brighter citrus notes without all the earthiness. The grist is 100% Bohemian malted barley, and the yeast is the H-strain from that brewery in Plzeň. This batch is completely unfiltered.

Tap at Amorphic. Creamy mouthfeel off the side pour. Has that earthy, grainy Czech malt feel, but the Riwaka takes it a different direction of course. Riwaka really shines actually, not bogged down by wheat and oats or other hops. A rather supreme NZ CZ unfiltered Pils. Unique and quite well executed.
