This is a big, bold Imperial Red Ale that’s tantalizingly smooth. While it’s triple digit IBUs suggest another violent “bitter bomb,” the Eruption instead releases onto the palate a glowing stream of balanced, bittersweet goodness that warms without dehydrating the tongue.
Don’t let the 100+ IBUs scare you – this is not a slab of red meat for the chalk-tongued hop monsters. Big numbers don’t always mean big bitterness. We use a whopping 6 pounds of hops per barrel, but only a fraction of our hop bill is for bittering. Instead we rely on fruity, fragrant, top shelf floral, piney and citrusy beauties like Cascade, Centennial, Crystal and Meridian to build up the taste without injecting too much acid to tear it down.

650 ml bottle. Pours a hazy orange/brown with moderate foamy head. Aromas of oranges, graham wafers, and sweet malts. Flavors of toffee, oranges, and toasted malts with a bit of light pine. Simple but nice.

Bomber from Made in Oregon. Pours sort of peach rose with an off-white head. Aroma is light stone fruit, mild malt, and a chocolate hint? Full bodied. Flavor is like aroma expt some citrus and the chocolate is very light. Amber. Chocolate. Often go together for me. Anyway it’s pretty drinkable stuff, thanks to the high ABV.

On tap at Stateside, pours a hazy dark amber with a small white head. Aroma is both malty and hoppy, with perhaps the caramel malt winning out, with subverted resinous hops. Flavour is also on the malty side, with caramel malts and wood upfront, with resinous hops in back. Good construction, but could use more hops as the sweetness becomes a little much after a while despite the 100 IBU. Finished on syrupy notes. Not a beer of elegance or subtlety by any means. Okay.
