Celebrating the next installment of our Brewer & Artist Series, we present the work of Ken Rayher, Katie Mcbride & Jonathan Lee:
Große Teufel is Ken's take on the once nearly extinct Lichtenhainer - an Eastern German ale that strikes an exceptional balance between its smoked barley base and lactic acid tartness. Megafaunal wolves, Elasmothere, and the Megaloceros no longer roam the earth, but the Lichtenhainer lives on.

Clear golden coloured body with a thin, single centimetre tall white head that fades relatively fast. Aroma of very interesting lightly smoked malt with the slightest hint of lactic tartness and a bit of citrus and light grain. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong smoked malt flavour at first that shows a big kick of lactose and lactic acid for tartness right behind - very interesting, and super easy drinking. Aftertaste shows the complexity that you’d expect with a slightly sour, smoked beer - nice and full flavoured with an easy drinking finish and a bit of sourness alongside some light fruit-based sugars and touches of wheat. Overall, just as the brewery description tells you, which is great, since i don’t think I’ve ever had a Lichenheiner before, but it’s great to try! Sadly, the description on the draught board from a ’tap takeover’ at Whole Foods (presumably typed by the brewery?) just says Berliner Weisse, which it definitely isn’t, and that’s not a bad thing. I sampled this sixteen ounce pint on draught during the aforementioned tap takeover at Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia at the end of my driveway on 07-October-2016 for US$4,00.
