Tucked in the backwoods of the legendary Saint John’s Abbey, the Sugar Shack is operated by monks passing on century-old secrets and providing some seriously sweet history. These guys take maple syrup making as seriously as we take great beer brewing. These discerning monks have given Third Street Brewhouse exclusive rights (yep, that means just us) to pair their notorious sweet blend with our perfectly crafted beer so we can bring you the Sugar Shack Maple Stout. Can. Deep dark brown with a medium tan head. Arina was hints of dark toast, dark roasted grains and maple. Taste was dark roasted grains and maple.

On draft at First Draft in Minneapolis. Pours a clear dark cola with a tan head. Aromas of maple and coffee. Flavors are sweet licorice and bitter chocolate. Light bodied.

Can. Molasses, maple syrup, chocolate malt, and hay aroma. Black with large brown head. Moderately sweet maple syrup, chocolate malt, and mildly bitter hay flavor. Body pretty light - metallic finish/aftertaste.

Can: Deep brown/black with a creamy, dark tan head. Roasted brown sugar, chocolate aroma. Taste is very sweet at first....milk, chocolate malt, overcooked brown sugar, maple syrup, root beer. Leafy, earthy bittering......some bitter walnut flavour. Body is pretty thin....despite all the busy darker elements....weak, overall.

Tap. Pours clear black, small tan head, good lacing. Aroma is odd, not really maple, more sasparilla perhaps? Rooty, woody, yes some maple, cocoa, roast malt. Flavor is light plus sweet, light bitter, a bit weird. Medium body, soft mouthfeel.

Draft at Red Cow. Clear maroon amber color, thick tan head with solid lacing. Aroma of brown sugar Taste is shockingly sweet burnt brown sugar.

From the March 2014 3R6P tasting. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a large fluffy dark tan head that faded quickly and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was sweet maple, brown sugar, chocolate and had a malty undertone. The flavor was malty chocolate, brown sugar, maple, faint fruity hops and a touch of wood. Long malty chocolate and maple finish. Moderately full bodied and creamy. Interesting.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a clear very dark brown with a chocolate brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of dark grain and a bit of a burnt sugar notes with a touch of underlying maple. Flavor has same dark grains with a light burnt note and dark toffee with a touch of maple through the finish.

Pours a darker brown with a rather small head. Maple syrup dominates the aroma, along with coffee and a burnt, almost smoky aroma. Flavor is primarily the maple part of the syrup, coupled with some burnt toast, coffee, and chocolate. Fairly bitter finish. Rather light mouthfeel--could use some thickening up or something (not very stoutlike, really).
