Old Carlsberg Porter has an almost oily-fat filling and appears black with tight mocha colored foam. The taste is sweet with a hint of dry bitterness. The aroma is powerful with notes of licorice root, newly roasted coffee, bitter chocolate and warming alcohol.

Bottle courtesy of Thewolf: Poured a deep clear black color ale with a medium foamy head with some good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted notes is the most dominant notes. Taste is a mix between some roasted notes with a touch of sweetness. Medium body with some good carbonation. Easily drinkable but nothing is remarkable in this beer.

Bottle. Near black with a creamy tan head. Plenty of roasted notes in the aroma. Flavour of dark chocolate and liquorice with a sightly oily mouth feel and a warming alcohol finish. Very good.

33 cL bottle (as Carls porter). Pours black with a lasting a light brown head. Roasted, cane sugar and dry aroma. Sweet cane suar flavour with a following roasted malt flavour. Goes slight dry and bitter into the finish. Great classic, but it gets cloying quite quickly.

Bottled at Portertunnan, Gothenburg. (1994 vintage) Dark brown, almost black, clear beer with a dense, tan head. Mature and rounded aroma with licorice, chocolate and coffee. No bitter-notes. Some roasted notes in the flavor, and lots of licorice. Medium body and a finish with licorice and some alcohol. Nice 12-years old. Rating: 7-4-7-3-14-3.5. (060826)[br][br]Bottle, quite fresh. A clear, reddish brown beer with a beige head. Malty, sweetish nose with roastyness, coffee and chocolate. Chocolate, coffee, roasted and burnt malt, sweetness, some alcohol and a little hoppy bitterness in the mouth. Medium to full body. A little warming feeling as well. Coffee and chocolate finish, with some alcohol. Still a nice one. (080509)

Bottled vintage 1994, sampled in Aug 2006. Opaque black, no head. Wineous, portwine-like nose, some tar. Very wineous, smooth palate - salted licorice, roasted malts, tar. Only very light sign of oxidation. Absolutely lovely vintage.

Huge dark yellow-brown, very fine foam, leaving lace; quasi-black beer but with sparkling ruby reflections. Explosion of malts in the nose; dark malt mash, dark malts, also from dark grains as in French Noirs, and burnt grains. As entering a (dark) malt silo. Dry, wry, bitter malts taste, with a bittering effect that keeps growing. Straw, bitterish dried mushrooms, vaguely nutty, tad of chocolate, black cardemoms... And, guess what, pretty complex. There’s quite some restsugar underneath, but it cannot turn the brew sweet. Medium to well bodied, obvious grist slickness. If the taste is tilted towards the bitter, the balance between drinkability and body is excellent. From all the big brewers, Carlsberg is the one that puzzles me most. They’re capable of both the worst and the best - a bit like Coors in the USA. And, come to think of it (the Belgian branch of) Scottish&Newcastle. Big thanks to DeanS for this gem.
