Bottled. Could definitely taste the algae. Well not really. Poured deep brown with beige head. Vaguely fruity and malty scent. Some molasses, dark chocolate. Pretty well done.

Deep dark brown coloured body that shows about a 90% opacity - quite dark throughout, with a nice if slightly understated two to three centimetre tall rich brown head. Aroma of caramel, nuts, earth, toffee, rubbing alcohol, earth and a heavy hint of star anise that is quite bitter. Medium-bodied; Super strong rich malty flavours that show a lot of unsweetened cocoa along with a huge dose of grain and oatmeal, all with a deep and slightly offensive note that has the pungent alcohol as the aftertaste. That aftertaste is strong and sort of hidden (as much as possible) but the flavours and the style are fairly evident throughout. Overall, a deep and incredibly strong and pungent beer that shows the caramel and toffee notes a bit too strongly and disencourages bigger beers. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Giant [Foods] in Falls Church, Virginia on 04-March-2016 for US$1,75 sampled a bit more than three years later at home in Washington on 08-March-2019.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown, creamy head. Sweetish aroma and flavor is coffee, chocolate, and a bit of dark fruit. Molasses as well. Creamy feel, plenty boozy. Finishes hot and roasty. Pretty good, a little weird, and probably slightly higher than needed ABV-wise.

Great balance and well done. Pours black with ok head. Caramel and roast. Some dark chocolate. Bittersweet finish. Potent stuff. Tap at rustico.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled on 12/10/2015. Mostly black with half a finger of tan head. Aromas of caramel, dark chocolate, toffee, salted caramel, light alcohol, a little flowery. Tastes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, slight hint of salt, caramel, some peppery spice. Full body with a dry finish. Alcohol comes out as it warms. Might age my second bottle and see how it develops.

Draft at Meridian Pint. Opaque maroon brown color, dark brown head. Aroma of wattle seeds. No, just kidding. I have no idea what a wattle seed is. Aroma really has cocoa and coffee. Taste has burnt espresso, chocolate, licorice. Decent. But points off for being so hipster.

Bottle from the Collaboration pack from Wine Warehouse. Pours black, thick, with a nice soft brown head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, milk, light fruit. Taste is whew! Chocolate, lightly smoked malts, cherry, light metal, salt. This isn’t hiding the alcohol - but that’s perfectly fine. Yum.

12 ounce bottle from the Collaboration Pack. It was a blast running into Jason and the Wicked Weed guys right after they brewed this! And thanks Jason for the sneak preview of this and the Surly beer. Haven’t even opened the bottle yet and somehow I know this is excellent! Dark brown, medium sized dense, foamy brown head. Good retention. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, cherries, coconut, vanilla. The taste is coconut, vanilla, chocolate, cherries, hints of salt. Medium bodied, low carbonation, well balanced, smooth and complex. Just a damn good beer.
