On tap at Ocean Beach brewpub. Translucent brown color. Earthy roasted malt aroma hints at chocolate and licorice. Flavor is sweet chocolate, dark malt and treacle. Full and rich. Maybe some dark brewed tea and Worcestershire sauce in the finish. Really well done.

Bottle. Very dark brown color, thick tan head with good retention. Nice aroma of pine dipped in espresso. Taste has bitter chocolate, coffee, pine resin, nice balance. Very tasty.

22oz bomber (8.8%) pours with a dark brown to mahogany colored body that supports a full tall dark tan head. The aroma offers up thin dark roasted malts, spicy to earthy floral hops, a dash of citrus and then a pleasing milk chocolate note. The taste is similar with a hoppy blend of citrus, spicy onion like hops and floral hops floating around amid nice chocolate malts, some dark roasted malts and thin black patent burnt maltiness. It leaves behind a pleasant toasty toasty sensation with persistent hops. Nice CDA.

Draught @ the brewpub, San Diego. Aroma is sweetish with rye tones and resiny malt. Flavour has leathery notes, rye, licorice and some resin. Finishes with strong lingering hoppiness. A solid BIPA.

Draught @ Mike Hess North Park, San Diego, CA
Pours dark brown, almost black with a smooth white head. Aroma of roasty malts, licorice, coffee, chocolate, hints of grassy hops. Taste is heavy, roasty and hoppy with some salty licorice, chocolate, coffee and hops. Finish is smooth, slightly roasty and malty with some licorice. Okay, quite heavy black IPA.

Draught. Arbitrary score 4/5 for Appearance, as nighttime conditions prevented correct assessment. Minty nose, fresh hops, aroma of liquorice without the sweet connotation. Dark malts and USA hops (surprise, surprise), bitter, dry and tart. Some bitter chocolate. Can’t find it really good - wonder if it is me, or does the beer rubs me the wrong way?

On tap at the brewery. Pours with a near black body with a large, fluffy, off-white head. Aromas are of cocoa, coffee, roast, spice, citrus, pine, hops, light leather. Flavors a bit too roast forward for my taste in Black IPA’s (or whatever you want to call them)(I’m picky in that respect), that said it is just barely too roasty. Flavors of roast, leather, citrus, pine and some dankness from the hops. Medium bubbles and body. Dry and nicely bitter.
