Way back in the early ’90s, a 20-something waiter in New York City named Sam got a taste for small American “microbrews.” A do-er, Sam stopped by a homebrew store and embarked on the first batch of his very own beer. On the way home, he spotted a bag of cherries at his local bodega and thought they’d make his beer a little more interesting.
He was right, and the day after he and his friends enjoyed that first batch, he started researching what it would take to open a brewery.
The rest, as they say, is history. Higher Math is a tribute to that auspicious first beer and celebrates 20 off-centered years of Dogfish Head. It’s a golden strong ale fermented with sour cherry juice and cocoa nibs and clocks in at 17% ABV.
Higher Math has forward notes of cherries, pineapple and stewed fruit, with late notes of cocoa. It has a lingering sweetness and a notable warmth from the alcohol.

Looks like Robitussin. Aroma and taste isn’t much better. Boozy cherry and chocolate. Syrupy sweet, full body, minimal carbonation.

12oz bottle pours a murky amber with some ringing, white head. Nose has malt, spruce, very vegetal, booze. Flavor is gross, hot as shit, malt, booze. Burns on the end.

Bottle brought to the November 2015 DC Gathering by DCLawyer. Thanks! Poured a clear, dark ruby amber color with a small white head. Aroma was strong boozy cherry notes. Light chocolate. Light tart notes, lots of booze, some sweetness. Interesting, though the high boozy notes make this a little difficult to drink fresh - I wonder how a little age would mellow out the rough edges on this one.

A reddish copper ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with loads of burned caramel, dark fruits, molasses, alcohol warmth, nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity malt with loads of treacle, licorice, dark fruits, plums, pinot de charente, alcohol warmth, very nice. On tap at Ginger Man NYC.

Bottle courtesy of DCLawyer, thanks! Bright reddish amber color. Aroma of sweet cherry. Taste is chocolate covered cherry. Would work nicely as a sour.

From a 12 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a cloudy deep copper with an ecru head. Flavors of chocolate and cherries. Very sweet with some strange flavors in the finish. Not a fan.
