Catching Moonlight (2025) - Wild Turkey Barrel

Twin Sails Brewing in Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada 🇨🇦

  Stout - Imperial Regular

This hefty Imperial Stout had a brief stint on stainless before being transferred into freshly emptied Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels. It was then laid to rest for 24 months. We hand-selected one barrel which we felt stood out from the rest, and that liquid is what you're currently holding in your hands.

This beer encompasses all of the characteristics we love in a barrel-aged Imperial Stout - rich dark chocolate, hints of coffee, dried fig, raisin, and vanilla, along with subtle notes of bourbon and just enough warmth to give you a big ol' hug from the inside. A perfect sipper this season.

Ah, Wild Turkey. The best barrels money can buy. Ok, this pours dark. Not much head. The aroma has a slight soy sauce to it - better than kikkoman but not as good as the really good shit. Sort of a heavy-handed bourbon layered over top of that. On the palate, good body. Medium bitterness and sweetness alike. The bourbon isn't as rough. The sugars aren't super rich, but they are decent. Less soy sauce. It's solid - glad to see my house stouts from Twin Sails and Backcountry are back after last year's hiatus.

On tap at Twin Sails, pours jet black with a small brown head. Nose has a rather brutal bourbon character, moderate roast, and some cocoa—very abrasive. Flavour is brutal, with massive bourbon character that comes very harsh, moderate roast, iodine, some booze, and a little cocoa. Lacking integration, quite brutal, and possesses none of the elegance that the earlier years had. Not bad but needs a lot of work.

On tap at Twin Sails. Pours very dark brown with a brown head. Bourbon barrels and stale brown bread on the nose, a bit waxy. Flavour has a lot of very waxy bourbon barrels, tons of heavy malts, dark sugars. It doesn't come together though, very brutal and hamfisted. It's pretty rough.

Aroma: mix of American oak and black chocolate, bold. Zero presence of the fruity character that was found in tap.
Taste: along the same lines - mix of dark chcocolate, American oak. Very smooth with some bourbon notes.
Overall: darn, this is great! ❤️

Taster.
Aroma: bold, berry/fruity notes coming from the barrel.
Taste: along the same lines, nice body, but the berries notes coming from the barrel makes it tasting weird to me. This barrel was selected among the others because it tasted very different, but I am not sure whether this difference makes it unique in a good way.
Overall: ok.
