1996 vintage from Toby. Dark brown pour, minimal head. Aroma is a bit of varnish, but go beneath for some solid peaty, malty, leathery traditional old ale flavors. Hard on the nose, easy on the palate.

12 oz. bottle. 1996 vintage. Pours black with no head. The aroma is strong and fruity, with notes of grapes, figs, and cherries. The flavor is sweet and tart, with a slight bitter finish. The palate is heavy and sticky, with no carbonation. Overall, something that’s waited 15 years to be opened should be better.

Bottle Vintage 1996 thanks to ditmier. Pours out a dark mahogany with no head. Aroma was pit fruit, dust, caramel, and some wine notes. Taste was much as the aroma with the wine notes leading the way. Always fun to try something with some age on it.

275 ml bottle labeled #4929, bottled 1996. Very dark maroon, no head or lacing, no legs either. Aroma of slightly sour port wine, raisins, plums. Taste is oily, vinuous, resiny, with sour cherries, grapes. No bitterness. Good example of the style.

1996 bottle - 11 year old bottle. Personally, I have cellared it for 2 years and fridged it for a few hours. Poured into a Leffe rounded goblet. Pours with absolutely no head, looks dead. A thin pour but really dark brown, no clarity and just minimal spots of translucence. Aroma is strong, all aged malt, all British. Lots of chocolate but a slight cardboard (oxidation) as well. Defintely those nice characteristics of an aged British brew come out with minimal signs of the negative side of age. Also an aroma grapes passed their prime. Taste is not as lucky. Still nice, some raison and chocolate. But then the taste is also thinning out, some light vinegar at the end of the flavor. Aftertaste is all dark grapes. I really cant say I would want to age this any longer, even if properly stored I cant see this age any better. Carbonation is low, mouthfeel is left thin as well.
