Bid farewell to winter’s cruel tyranny with the creamy, bittersweet dark chocolate flavors and fresh raspberry tartness of Alberta Clipper Porter. Named for the intense winter storms that sweep the Midwest and Great Lakes Regions, making us all a little tougher (and a lot colder), Alberta Clipper is the perfect treat to celebrate the return of milder weather and kiss those wintry winds goodbye… at least for a little while.

Draft pour at Great Lakes Brewing. Poured a really dark brown color, almost black, but not quite. Aroma was roasted malts, but front and center is an aroma that is like a raspberry cordial. Flavor has a ton of chocolate-covered raspberries. Dark chocolate. Really nice, but more of a desert-type of a beer.

Bottle as a trade extra. Pours clear ruby mahogany, small tan head, dissipates fairly quickly, good lacing. Aroma is roast, cocoa, raspberry, clay. Flavor is light plus sweet, light plus bitter, raspberry and cocoa. Medium body.

Bocktown tap. From the smell, I couldn’t wait to taste. Has a nice dark beer aroma with perhaps a touch of clove on the nose. At first the taste is fairly mild with perhaps some clove in there. Then it gets a little more bold, with its dark beer attitude it leaves a slightly cloying roasty burnt wood finish.

bottle - Pours near black with a small tan head. The aroma is mainly of roasted malt and chocolate with maybe a hint of fruit. It tastes sweet, fruity, and chocolatey. Smooth and tasty. Full bodied. Very good.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head with large bubbles. Aroma of raspberries, cherries, grain, light coffee, earth, malt and a touch of chocolate. Medium-bodied; A touch watery at first with an earthy and nutty flavour that shows some chocolate and a hint of coffee right afterwards, with a thin texture and a rather watery finish. Aftertaste shows some light sugars and mellow fruit, and almost no malt at all to speak of - light. Overall, a decent porter at best. Good intentions all around, and while it smells good, it doesn’t look too great and the watery profile and relatively simple finish make this drinkable if you like the style, but not worth searching for if you don’t - fairly simple here. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (Foggy Bottom, Eye Street NW) on 11-May-2015 for US$3,49 sampled at home in Washington on 31-October-2015.
