Abbaye des Rocs (9% ABV) is a pure malt beer with no added sugar. The harmony of flavours is directly linked to its double fermentation process, the precise quantities of malt used (7 types). It is a majestic, papal, dark ruby red colour. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is enjoyed like a red wine, whose colour it resembles, but without the tannin. It develops a very powerful aroma with sweet notes. It confirms the initial impression in the mouth, although now enveloped by a deep bitterness, yet one that is well balanced and with a certain fruitiness. It is released fully on the palate, developing an impressive density of flavour. There are notes of burnt wood, but although this beer includes a roasted malt in its ingredients, this does not come through in the aroma. The aftertaste is very long thanks to its dense and creamy development whilst in the mouth. The bitterness and sweetness (even though no sugar is added) rival one another magnificently, but come out as equals, to the great satisfaction of the taster.

In 2019 the new 1979 label was introduced to commemorate the 40th jubilee of the brewery.

bottiglia 33 cl, schiuma fine color cappuccino media persistenza, color marrone intenso, al naso malto marsala frutta candita zucchero di canna, in bocca malto caramello toffee uvetta liquirizia lieve tostato, carbonatazione piatta, corpo strutturato, oleosa liquorosa, alcool perfettamente bilanciato, amaro percettibile che svanisce con l’elevata dolcezza finale. Sembra di bere un passito. Ottima birra 14.10.17

s a rich mahogany from a bottle, creamy off-white head made of incredibly small bubbles. Aroma is of sweet sherry soaked wood, flavor is a rich malty syrup, again some sherry, some newly split green hardwood, a hint of molasses. Good beer.

0.33l bottle. Malty aroma. Hazy dark copper color, white head. Malty taste, dates and figs notes, light alcohol notes, light sweet, light bitter. Medium to full body, slick texture, soft carbonation and light sweet finish with light alcohol notes. Good.

11 January 2019. At Cambrinus, Bruges. Shared with the lovely Anke. Rerate because it deserved it. Pours hazy brown with a lasting, thin, unstable, foamy, beige head; little lacing. Inviting aroma of pear syrup, 'pure' caramel, raisin, licorice, candied fig, cookie dough, cinnamon, lemon zest, triple sec, faint 'bloody' iron. Taste is medium malty sweet, quite fruity, candied fig & raisin, faint ripe pear but not in a phenolic way, some dough & caramel; light spicy bitterness brings 'spicy' licorice, some cinnamon, coriander & herbal touch of green tea. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering candied fruit & caramel, dough, dash of warming triple sec-like alcohol. Medium to full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Excellent in every way.

Hieman punertava, keskiruskea hieman samea olut. Vaahtoa aika vähän ja sekin vähä häviää hyvin nopeasti käytännössä kokonaan. Todella paljon isoja hiivapartikkeleita kaatuu pullosta jo puolessa välissä lasiin. Tuoksu hyvin maltainen, mämminen, rusinainen ja makea. Maku myös makean maltainen ja luumuinen. Loppupuolella makuun tulee pientä kuivuutta ja mausteisuutta. Täyteläinen, mutta hiilihappoisuus keventää tunnelmaa kivasti. Ei ihan pärjää parhaille Abbaye des Rocsin tekeleille. Edit. Tämä ensi kuussa "vanhaksi menevä" pullo on ulkonäöltään aiempaa kauniimpi. Vaahtoaa reilummin ja samettisemmin. Ulkonäkö 3->4 ja samalla kokonaispisteet 40->41
