One was inspired by a dark chocolate with jalapeño she can’t resist at our local organic co-op. The other grew up in Southern California and he consistently had a mug of the real thing in-hand at friends’ houses.
The duo behind our Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout used both experiences to craft our first Brewhouse Rarities release of 2015.
With lactose, cinnamon, serano chiles and cocoa powder added to the beer, a combination of sweet spice and roasted chocolate aromas are followed by flavors of dark chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and a lingering chili finish.

Bottled. Poured a darkish brown. Chiles, cocoa beans predominantly. Well balanced. Liked it.

it's an... an acquired taste. Smokey, chocolate, stouty goodness. But complex.

On tap @ The Gingerman. A deep and dark brown ruby colored one this small quickly sidesticking dark beige head on the top. Like the mild chocolate nose. There's some cocoa, savory beef stock and a hint fruity smoke. Mildish but nice. Where's the heat in this? Surprisingly thin and almost a little watery in the mouth while it's soft and prickling on the bubbles. Chocolate wrapper, nuts and a thin roasted tail. Not a bad beer, but oh so the name lies. 09.06.2015

Norm’s Beer and Wine, Vienna Virginia bottle: pours near black with a tan head. Aroma is hot cocoa, milk chocolate, and spice. Taste is kind of on the sweet side. Medium body. Nice chocolate aftertaste. I did not really get much in the way of peppers, but maybe some hints of vague spiciness.

Deep dark brown coloured body, about 90% opaque with a single centimetre tall head that is strictly deep brown coloured. Aroma of milk, lactose, roasted malt, raisins, light coffee and quite a bit of deep chocolate. Medium-bodied; Assertive milky and cream flavours throughout with a big presence of canella, allspice and more fragrant notes with some emphasis on light heat and a small amount of chiles. Aftertaste borders more of the sweet side with a hint of deep chocolate and a very light amount of spices. Overall, a well-balanced and rich beer with a touch of bitterness, but nice to have, for sure. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Crystal City Wine Shop (Crystal Drive) in Arlington, Virginia on 19-February-2015 for US$2,79 sampled at home in Washington a few steps away from the store on 22-May-2015.

12 ounce bottle. Opaque black color with a thick rocky tan head. Mild cocoa roasted malt nose. Slightly smoky notes. Rich dark malt flavor is soft on the palate with notes of cocoa and chile peppers. Slightly spicy, with warming notes. Long and smooth finish, with earthy, spicy notes.

Draft at GBD in Washington DC. Poured a dark brown color, nearly black, with a nice small, creamy tan head. Aroma was roasted malts, light coca notes. Chocolate, touch of herbal spices, cinnamon? Flavor was light chocolate, roasted, sweet malts. Cinnamon is there, there’s some light spice, but it’s not really all that spicy. Solid though.
