A Steinbier is a medieval brewing technique that involves heating rocks in fire and submerging them into the sugary “wort” to boil. The sugars caramelize on the surface of the rocks providing a unique and complex flavor. Ours is amber colored, malty, has a fruity nose and tea-like herbal hop character, and so smooth at 5.8% abv. Our friends at Fonta Flora have been making all types of steinbiers for years and were our willing guides through this process.
“Antarktis” translates to Antarctica in German and was inspired by our use of some rocks brought back from Antarctica by brewer Jeremy. When Jeremy isn’t making Goldfinger lagers, you may find him teaching geology or talking about rocks over some Hamms and a Malört at the Chipp Inn. As part of his masters degree in geology, he spent two months doing research in a part of Antarctica tourists wouldn’t roam.

16oz can. Amber-brown body, transparent. Steady, large beige head. Rich caramel malts, really nice stuff, reminds me of Bamberg. Some hop tone as well gives it some nice balance depth. Fantastic stuff, by far the best Stein beer I've ever had.

Draft pour at Goldfinger. Almost as dark as a doppelbock, with a creamy off-white head. Smell still has some yeast to it that overrides anything else at first. Taste is a full, hearty and malty smack. Caramel roast that would be pretty sweet if not for an otherwise indistinguishable balance of German style hops. Maybe a side note of black tea. Smell resolves to big doppel malts further down.
