Sour Blonde Ale Aged in Oak with Blueberries

Beauregarde is our first ever use of blueberries and we couldn’t be happier with how this beer turned out. We added an incredible amount of fruit to our barrel aged, sour blonde ale and the result is just as expected. A lovely shade of reddish purple with flavors of tart blueberries, just in time for summer. Perfect along side a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

750ml bottle thanks to Darrel. Pours out a pinkish topped with a dirty pink head. Nose is sour berries and some sweetness. Taste is as the nose with lots of berries and some tart. This is a nice sour. Keep the abv low and sours will turn out.

Pours cloudy and purple-tinged amber in color. In strong light, it’s brightly magenta. Small off-white head. The head dies away relatively quickly. No big deal, regardless, but particularly not for a sour. The aroma shows off the sourness right away. Lots of acetic and lactic sourness. Lemons and oak. The blueberries come through but get a bit muddled and could definitely be brighter and fruitier. This is a beer to drink sooner rather than later - probably a bit late with this bottle, already. Some vanilla. It’s pleasant enough but fairly simple and a touch harsh. The fruit doesn’t show up as juicy as I’d like, and there’s a sort of bile-ish note to it. More than anything, it doesn’t have the funk delicacy of better sours. Taste is similarly a bit too harsh and simple. The acidity is strong and needs to be dialed back so other flavors can shine. Sour blueberries and oak. Finish is a bit gummy as the acidity passes. The vanilla shows up again. Lots of pucker. A bit tough to drink after the first six-ish ounces. Happy to have tried it but it didn’t live up to expectations. The base sour just isn’t quite my cup of tea.

Tasting at Bruce’s new pad. Very hazy reddish mauve beer with a tidy lilac coloured head! Palate is light and crisp. Light sherbet sourness. Seltzer minerals. Touch of lemon and light blueberry fruits on the finish. Overall quite sherbet lemon in character.

Bottle @ Matt’s house from our Reserve Society membership. Pours a hazy maroon appearance with a white head. Fairly bright blueberry, acetic, oaky, vanilla aroma. Actually quite tart blueberry, woody, light vinegar, vanilla, a bit funky flavor that finishes dry and sour. Pretty tasty.

Bottle at Bruce’s, thanks to Ken. It pours hazy reddish-purple with a small white head. The nose is wood, juicy berry, jammy, vanilla, coconut and mild acidity. The taste is tart, acidic, jammy, sherbet, lemon, lime, wood and grape skin with a dry, tart finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Crisp, juicy and tart, but perhaps a bit too acidic. Tasty though.

Bottle - Berries and soured oak. Orange and cloudy red with little head. Sour and very acidic with blueberries peeking through. Acidity builds as you drink, I would recommend sharing.
