Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

On tap at Brick House. Pours a dark brown almost black with a small light tan head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is roasted malt with raisin and caramel. Thin mouthfeel with a roasted malt with toffee and smoke. Easy to drink a good schwarzbier from Rahr.

Bottle from ericandersnavy. To whom I say thanks, cause I have no idea how I could have this otherwise!!! Very dark brown color with a decent tan head. Aroma of toasted dark malt. Medium plus body with frothy carbonation. Flavor is dark toasted malt. It’s not sweet, it’s not bitter, more or less. Balanced. Good as, or better than, anything the Deutschers brew. Nice dark flavors on through the finish.

Light brown head that fizzes away quickly. Dark brown body left underneath with zero lacing. Weak coffee malts in the aroma. Taste is salty, light coffee malts and very watery.

Draught at the brewery
Hazy dark brown color. Light aroma of roasted malt and wet cardboard. The flavor is weak, with the same mix.

Not much going on here - kind of tastes like roasted nut submerged in a glass of water - quite drinkable, but so is bud light - rather uninteresting.
