Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Great American Beer Festival 2012. Very light malt aroma and flavor. Low carbonation, some lager yeast. Mildly roasted malt flavor, very simple. What is there is not bad, but too light.

On tap at the Houston Flying Saucer. Pours a clear brown with a slight amber hue and a creamy brown head that laces nicely. Aroma has notes of toast and roasted malts with backing dark grains. Flavor starts with dark grains and develops a bit of a smokey and toasty note through the finish.

Bottle sample at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Thanks beerandbeyond. Clear brown color. Aroma has a bit of roastiness, slightly grainy, and light vegetal acidic notes. Sweetish roasty flavor with a bit of coffee, slightly "green", light acidity and a drier finish. Medium-bodied. Decent.

Received this in trade from TexIndy, thanks for the opportunity. Pours a nice dark brown with ruby highlights when held to light. Nice size off white head dissipates quickly. Aroma of Smoky nutty roasty malts. Not much hop to be found in the nose. Tastes like it smells, roasted malt bitterness in the finish. Bubbly creamy mouthfeel. Medium to thin in the body. I thought the carbonation seemed a bit to high and lessened my enjoyment of this brew. Overall a decent brew, I could see myself enjoying a few of these.

bottle pours dark brown almost black with a thin tan head. Aroma is burnt malt, metal, and dark bread. Flavor is actually pretty good, lots of roasty malt, little coffee hints and a big burnt black patent kind of finish.
