Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Bottled. Poured a watery dark with almost no head. Schwarzy enough but with almost no carbonation it kind of sucked.

Veggie, mineral maltiness. Light body, more mealy veggies in the middle with a light roasty finish.

Notes from May 2009 My first tastes of Rahr, you know who you are. :) Smoke rising off the lip, a ruby highlighted, black bourbon sort of brew. Sloshy inch of light tan head, leaving behind just speckles of lace. Good bit of sediment caked at the bottom of the glass, with just enough chewiness falling into the glass. Smell is of crystal malt, minerals, sticky beer residue & metal. Taste is predominately mild coffee grounds, bigger cola, & bark. Lightly sharp roast in the front, followed by a quick dash of citric acid, & then some biscuity sweetness. Finish is somewhat dusty, but with just a twinge of residual sweetness. Frothy, excited mouthfeel. Thin & light, like I think it should be. Easy enough to quaff, but just not as satisfying a flavor as I would like. Sam Adams(black lager) seems to have the six pack a day schwarz down pat. But hey, I drank two as a capper. It can't be too bad. :)

12 oz. can purchased in Austin, TX. 5.5% ABV. Pours a clear very dark mahogany color with a small beige head and good retention. Spotty lacing. Roasted malt aroma. The flavor follow the nose. Mostly roasted malt flavor with a little dark chocolate in the mix. Light-medium body. Very clean and smooth. Not bitter. Really good.

Splash at the TGI Friday's in DFW. Black, with a small, frothy, tan head. The aroma is mild coffee, chocolate, some anise, and pine. Sweet and malty, with a hard bitterness. Pretty nice.

Can: Pours deep, clear, cola-brown with a tight beige head. Lactic chocolate, earthy caramel scent. Taste is slightly bitter, roasty/earthy chocolate malt. Rich, almost sticky/tacky body/feel... Very decent, and pretty tasty and comfortable..... (A little bias on this one, as I’ve had the pleasure of having 11 pugs as my children in my lifetime.....) thanks to shrubber85 for the share.

Can. Sour milk, chocolate malt, and hay aroma. Chestnut brown with large tan head. Smoky, lightly sweet chocolate malt, and mildly bitter hay flavor. Good body. Tastes way better than it smells.
