Tropical Stout Collab with Hibiscus and Molasses

Collab with Hogan's Alley with support from Yuplook & Royal Labels

Inspired by an African Shangaan story, Masingi is a healing presence invited in song, rooted in diasporic call-and-response traditions. This stout honours Hogan’s Alley Society, a Black-led nonprofit advancing housing, cultural preservation, and community. Brewed with molasses and hibiscus, it carries depth, brightness, and memory.

Dark brown, some roast up front, light alcohol. Not bad. Not the pinnacle of the style, too North American and clean.

Brown, tan head. Malt molasses nose. Pleasant earthy malt profile with medium roast bitterness . Good but not what was expected

On tap at Luppolo, pours black with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out bizarre herbal/vegetal notes—I guess that’s the hibiscus—along with some molasses, and toasted malt. Flavour is bizarre, with lots of bitterness from the molasses—almost more like marmite—with a strange floral undertone. Marmite bomb. This doesn’t work at all. Ugh.

On tap at Luppolo. Pours black with a beige head. Toasted rye bread on the nose with subtle floral notes; a bit of an odd combo. Flavour is pretty odd: burnt malts, an iodine-like molasses character, and gentle floral accents. This does not come together for me, the malts aren't really there and the molasses does not help.
