A specially roasted coffee blend, by our friends at Shenandoah Joe, is cold infused it into a rich oatmeal stout, creating a balanced, crushable coffee stout
Dave Fafara, Roastmaster at Shenandoah Joe, right across the street from Three Notch’d came up with a special three roast coffee blend just for this beer. The coffee beans are cold infused allowing the fresh flavor and aroma to dominate without the acidity.
All of this is backed by a rich and hearty oatmeal stout with a great semi-sweet-baking-chocolate-like sweetness.

22oz bottle pours a water, but mostly opaque black with some ringing white head. Nose is a bit mild, lightly nutty, some light toast, mild brewed coffee, a little liquid smoke. Flavor is better, the coffee finally shines through, some malt and molasses sweetness too, a little fruity/sour tamarind, a little cola, a touch meaty. Dry finish. Good complexity.

Draft at the brewery. Pours dark brown with a dusting of a head. Aroma of coffee and some chocolates. Taste is roasted coffee beans, earth, maybe some chocolates. It’s fine, but I wasn’t wowed.

Sample at GABF 10/03/2014, thanks to my sis for assistance with note-taking. The beer pours a brownish-black color with some ruby around the edges. Medium beige head that recedes steadily to a film. Partial ring of lacing. Roasted malt, coffee and chocolate in the nose. Light-bodied with flavors of milk chocolate, coffee and malt. The finish is roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Above average overall.

Draft at the brewery. Pours a dark brown color with a thin frothy head. Decent head retention. Aroma of dark roasted coffee, roasted malts, chocolate, some green notes. The taste is chocolate, coffee, bitter roasted malts. Medium bodied, decent balance, slight lingering bitterness.
