We, who live by values, not by loot, are traders, both in matter and in spirit. The Saison style of beer originates from farmers in French-Belgium regions that would brew during the winter months for refreshment during the busier, hotter months of the summer. Virginia’s history is rich in the farm trade and Three Notch’d Road was a central thoroughfare that facilitated this trade. The Trader is our tribute to the mark this hard work left for all of us to benefit from.

This Farmhouse Ale, originating from the Northern France/Southern Belgium region, encompasses the flavors of many herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables that were historically added by the farmhands after harvest each year. The special Belgian yeast is the highlight of this beer, complemented with the single-hop of Crystal and its complex herbal/spice/pepper profile.

Very nice, super hazy golden coloured body with a thinnish, off-white head that leaves a pretty ugly lace on the sides of the glass. Aroma of grass, dry hay, soft wheat, light biscuits, a touch of flowers and some pungent yeast, but a nice robust complexity. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong grassy and herbal flavour at first that shows more of a Biere de Garde note than a saison, but a light biscuity malt and robust yeast presence makes this quite strong and very dry, throughout. Aftertaste shows the herbal and soft malt finishes more than anything else, but the light hops and the yeast astringencies add to the bitterness at the end, and there is no sweetness throughout - from fruits, caster sugar and everything. Overall, a pretty deep offering, especially for the relatively low alcohol, but very dry and fairly simplistic. Good if you like those aspects of a saison, but not so great otherwise. I sampled this full sixteen ounce pint, from Whole Foods in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 27-September-2019 for US$5,00.
