Flemish sour ale as interpreted by this brewery in Colorado, from a 2015 vintage bottle shared by Leopold, cheers! Thick and frothy, pale yellowish beige, stable head lacing in shreds over a clear, deep copper-brown beer with ruby red hue. Aroma of stewed blackberries, red wine vinegar, cooked apple, caramel, violets, dusty old wooden boards, hints of melting sugar, passionfruit, fig juice. Crisp, fruity onset, lots of drying sourness from the start, hinting at blackberries, cranberries and sour cherries, softish carbonation; rounded caramelly core with a 'clean' brown-bready edge, dried by this strong lactic tartness that runs throughout the beer but also by explicit woody tannins, paired with a whiff of bourbon-like sweetishness and lingering fruit wine- and sour berry-like aspects. A vanilla-ish oak note shines retronasally. Clean and streamlined yet complex and layered, very convincing example of this style, which is not the easiest one to evocate by far.

Sample from bottle at Bob's Bar during the Funkwerks Debut! event on 03/06/2019. The beer is a clear mahogany color with a medium thin light beige head that diminishes steadily to a film. Stringy lace. Aroma of tart fruit, oak, spice and malt. Medium body with flavors of tart cherry, oak, spice and earthy malt. The finish is moderately tart with a cherry and berry aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Fridge temp, enjoyed with the QC tasting group. Reddish brown pour with a small almost missing head. Classic cherry pie, honey, pecan, oak and acidic fruit tart smell. Good mouthfeel, has a nice creamy quality to it with tight small bubbles. Sour but not overpowering, has cherry, lemon, raisin, dry with almost no sweetness and a small graham cracker and ginger finish.

Tap at Funkwerks - dark purplish amber - off white head - nose is tannic, moderately acetic, wifh some lactic tartness - no brett to speak of, but some pleasant spicy cinnamon and sweet raisin balance the bugs - flavor is dry, moderately spicy, with some underlying brown sugar and raisin - some red wine, light oak, light vanilla/bourbon - lightly tart finish, with lingering vanilla - pretty good, really.
