John wanted to take our ongoing exploration of IPAs in a completely new direction, layering classic American hops over the malty base of a rich brown ale. Sweet, roasted notes of chocolate and honey malts combine with the pine and citrus of Chinook, Simcoe and Amarillo hops in this hearty and welcome addition to our family of IPAs.

Bottle @ gmellison via trade. Pours a reddish brown appearance with a light brown head. Somewhat toasty and nutty, a bit dusty, caramel aroma. Moderate bitterness. Fairly malty flavor with a touch of coffee and some caramel. Earthy hops. Ok.

Bomber from Wine Warehouse. Pours a clear dark brown color with a large foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of tropical, citrus, pine hops, mild caramel and chocolate. The taste is citrus, resin hops, mild caramel and brown malt, a bit of pine. Thin-medium bodied, strong lingering bitterness. Finally have had a beer tonight that doesn’t suck! (Champion Brewing, I’m only referring to beers I’ve had since I got home, not that excellent Slaycation I had earlier.)

Sampled on draft at Dad’s pub this beer poured a dark nut brown color with a medium sized foamy tan head that faded and left minimal lacing. The aroma was bitter, pine and fruity hops with a nutty toffee undertone. The flavor was dry and bitter with pine, fruity hops, lemon, nut, toffee, wood and lots of crystal malt. Long bitter finish of pine, fruity hops and wood. Medium body. Ok.

22 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 5/15/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon zest, orange zest, caramel, toast, chocolate, floral, grass, pine, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity of citrus/tropical hops with moderate dark/roasted malt notes; with great strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, peach, lemon zest, orange zest, caramel, chocolate, toast, brown bread, light roast, floral, grass, pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, peach, lemon zest, orange zest, caramel, toast, chocolate, brown bread, light roast, floral, grass, pine, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity of bright citrus/tropical hop and moderate dark/roast malt flavors; with a crisp malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent IPA. All around great balance and complexity of bright citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/roast maltiness; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours mahogany into a tulip. Tan head with little retention recedes to skim surface. Sweet chocolate and resin aromas. Dry with chocolate and dark caramel upfront turning to resin in the lasting finish.
