Partridge in a Pear Tree was brewed in the style of a Belgian-style quadrupel ale, with dark candied sugar and both Munich and Vienna malts. We then aged it in bourbon barrels for over a year, adding complexity to this beautifully rich and dark ale. Singing with notes of dark fruits and oak, this simple yet immensely complex ale is intended to be consumed with good company.

This 375 ml bottle comes from the complete BBA 12 Days collection bought from the brewery last month, 2020 Edition it says on the label. I have had the regular Partridge in a Pear Tree previously, thought it was good but not life changing. Let us see now what bourbon barrels have done for this quadrupel. This tasting will get the Trappistes Rochefort glass treatment, not something I do often. The pour is an amber-brown body finished by a promptly-gone skim of light tan, very small bubbles. But I am encouraged by the persistent carbonation. The scent fills the air, lots of dark fruit, grain and booze. And I lift the glass for a drink. Good gosh, significantly more impressive than the nose. Dates, chocolate, cane syrup, baked bread, whiskey, malt, leather, red cherries and raisins. The mouth sensation is substantial and full. I feel a bit of a burn as it goes down. All of these are positives for me, I am pleased with this beer. And all these reviews and a pic in place only now. Curious.

750 ml bottle at DC Epic Sour Tasting 2010, courtesy of our host CaptainCougar, thanks! Murky brown color, scant head and lacing. Aroma of candied bourbon and butterscotch. Sickeningly sweet and syrupy. Not good.

Sampled at the DC Epic Sour Tasting 2010. Pours an opaque, copper amber with a creamy beige head. Figgy, sugary aroma, cherries, wood, vanilla, a little boozy. The flavor is a train wreck, too sweet, too sugary, figs, light cherry, vanilla, wood pulp. Finish is sticky, way too boozy, way too hot. This is a one note booze bomb, plain and simple.

75 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is dark roasted and wooden. Smooth caramelish and vague yeasty. Sweet caramelish flavoured. Light breadish roasted and towards toffee. Vague vanilla like note to the base. Sweet and caramelish finish.

750ml bottle thanks to the people at the Bruery (Patrick particularly). My 3000th rating. Had a few to choose from (Vagabond, Blabaer). This one was the star of the night. Pours with a huge tan head that has full retention and leaves great lace over the deep burgundy-brown body. A whole lot more bubbles than the regular Partridge. Aroma of dark fruits, nutty/pralines, caramel, poached pear, chocolate, dates and perfumey notes. Taste is incredibly complex. Dark fruits, nougat, caramel, candied dates, chocolate, wood, brandy, raisins and much more. Creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Decadent and truly awesome!
