The French brewery Les Intenables presents a true highlight for lovers of complex, dark beers. This Imperial Stout impresses with a formidable 11.8% ABV and is the result of patient craftsmanship. The name "Gabare" evokes the traditional boats that once transported goods on French rivers – fitting for a beer that carries a deep history and rich aromas.
What makes this stout special is its maturation: it was aged for 24 months in cognac casks . This two-year refinement gives the beer exceptional depth. Expect a deep black, almost oily brew with intense notes of dark chocolate and roasted malt, perfectly complemented by the elegant nuances of cognac. Subtle wood notes and a gentle warmth in the finish complete the experience. Thanks to the long maturation, the robust 11.8% ABV is beautifully integrated. An exquisite dessert beer best enjoyed slowly.

Can picked up from Beyond Beer webshop Hamburg, Germany and consumed at home Saturday 30th May 2026 during a long WhatsApp chat with Jude and Baz. We're sat in the porch after a couple of hours of mowing the lawns we then had two terrific thunderstorms. We had Saffron and Lemon Chicken with Flatbread for tea. Pours pitch black without much of a head. The cognac barrel ageing is immediately noticeable on the nose along with bitter chocolate and a roasty maltiness. Taste following a similar trajectory, however I feel that the barrel ageing is a little bit heavy handed and too dominant, decent mouthfeel but all told a beer that could and should have been better.
