We always try to release a barrel aged beer for the anniversary, so we’re happy to announce the beer for this year! Coconuts Rising Over Caramel Horizons is a Munichwine, aka barleywine brewed with the richer Munich malt as a base. This beer spent 26 months in bourbon barrels, developing its flavor. With a judicious addition of toasted coconut, cacao nibs and caramel, we sought to highlight the prominent flavors already in the base beer.

Bottle shared by CLW--thanks, Chris! Virtually opaque dark brown, no head, light viscosity, no lacing. Aroma is coconut, bourbon (on green apple side), nuts (walnut?), caramel. Taste is strongly sweet coconut and caramel, bourbon (again on apple side), late hint of cacao nibs. Smooth, silky texture, soft carbonation, sweet finish as taste. Interesting that I'm getting a green apple aroma/taste (given that there is none!). Quite sweet.

500 ml bottle. The aroma literally is coconut on top of caramel. The flavor is coconut and caramel in Spades!! The bourbon barely balances the sweet flavors. Rich caramel throughout with soft traces of coconut. Bourbon struggles to get through the adjuncts. Good, just not as balanced as I hoped.
