Boom, Boom. A big, bold swaggering cider, blended to the edge of dangerous. An American original. An authentic American rock ‘n roll cider. Blended 3 times, using apple-wines aged in American rye whiskey barrels – Colfax Classic apple-wine plus a “Forbidden Fruit” experimental wit-style yeast fermentation. Final blend with unfiltered fresh-pressed Gravenstein apple juice. ABV: 6.9%
Poured Appearance: Whiskey Cloudy. Slightly opaque. Color: Rich golden orange. Aroma: Mild moonshine Tennessee woods, soft spicy rye whiskey, ripe apple. Flavor: Dry, subtly spicy rye whiskey, butterscotch, faint banana & ripe apple with mild apple-skin tannins. Full bodied sexy finish. Final Blend: 63% fermented apple-wine, 23% Gravenstein fresh-pressed apple juice. Unfiltered & blended from apple-wine straight from the rye whiskey barrels. Give a solid, firm bottoms-up tilt and swirl to disperse sediment evenly to best enjoy whiskey aromas and unique bouquet. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature, 50/55F, with or without 1 or 2 ice cubes. Stagger Lee is most certainly worthy of aging in your cellar.

Bottle. Sweet fresh apple, oak and light whiskey aroma Hazy honey gold with a thin white ring. Sweet-tart apple, oak, subtle whiskey flavor. Light body, lively carbonation. I’m a sucker for apples and oak, they were made for each other.

$5 bottle from New Beer. Ommegang chalice. Cloudy wheat color; still. Slightly smokey, apple jack, minerally, strudel scent. So much subtler then the Tennessee Whiskey edition. Pie/juice apples, yeast, faint hints of whiskey, bit stronger on straight vanilla. Moderate acidity, almost no tartness. It needed bolder apples, & the wit yeast didn’t do much for me either. The barrels notes were very nice, though I didn’t get much spiciness from them. Still, yeasty/itchy body, mild alcohol(for what it is). Only 130 calories & very mild. I would enjoy glugging this cold.

Bottle. Pours with a murky yellow hued body with a fizzy white head (large at first) that fades to a ring. Strong fruity esters from a mile away. Lots of pear, and apple and honey suckle. Further aromas of vanillin, floral, honey, spicy oak, cardboard, sweetness, mild sulfur, banana, caramel and hazelnut. Definitely creative, and interesting Crispin stuff. Flavors are sadly sweet, oaky, rye, spicy cinnamon. CRISPIN: DO NOT BACK BLEND. No need for the extra sweetness...Saccharin or fresh cider are both unwelcome in this format. Mild tannin, banana esters. Strong floral esters, mild yeasty phenols. Lots of nutty, and slightly spicy character from the barrel. Slightly warming. I have no clue why the sweeten this; I’d imagine that it would be much more enjoyable without the sweetness. Vanillin, oak and barrel. Mild acidity and sulfur. So close, and it is easy to point out the failure. Lively bubbles, dry, mild tannin. Interesting, good, just not right with the sweetness.

Pours chunky pale yellow into a Sam glass. Bright white head crackles as it recedes to hug rim. Rye and apple aromas. Sweet oak and rye upfront turning to hot apple in the lasting finish.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run. Pours a hazy yellow color with a fizzy white head that fades quickly. Aroma of tart and candy apple notes, wood, whisky and spice. The taste is sweet apples, earthy notes, wood and whisky. Tart finish. Medium bodied. Interesting.

Bottle from the Nugget on Covel in Davis, CA. Pours hazy dishwater gold. Aromas of ripe green apple skin and spiced peach. Near medium body. Flavor is green apple, light stone fruit, clove?, rye, and some astringent oak. One of the two best ciders I’ve had, and both have been from Crispin. Just goes to show that barrel aging will improve anything. Nice dry finish.
