Nez de malt rôti, de chocolat noir, moyen d’anis, léger de fumée (tourbe) et de fruits (léger de prunes, notes de raisins, traces de bananes) avec des notes de café, de caramel ainsi que des traces de vanille boisée (bourbon). Moyennement ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen-doux ainsi qu’une texture légèrement crémeuse. Moyen goût de levures fruitées (prunes, léger de raisins, faibles traces de bananes) aux notes épicées avec un léger goût de chocolat noir et des notes de réglisse noire lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un goût de malt rôti avec un léger goût de caramel terreux puis en finale l’on retrouve une légère amertume de houblon herbeux avec des notes de café ainsi que des traces de fumée (bourbon). Post-goût moyen-long et un peu sec, composé d’une légère amertume de rôti, de houblon herbeux, léger de chocolat avec des notes fruitées et quelques traces de vanille.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a small foamy tan head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was dryish malted milk, a bit of toasty malts and port wine. The flavor was dryish toasty malts with molasses, malted milk, wood, and a boozy presence. Medium length dry woody and roasty finish. Thin mouthfeel. Disappointing.

22oz bomber courtesy of Anndiesel. Burgundy caramel brown-black body, oily beige head. Huge chocolate caramel taste, quite thick and sugary. Really unique with the fruity undercurrents of the Belgian yeast. The moderate ABV helps spotlight the big, rich malt and barrel flavors. Some Caribbean Stout tendencies but way better in quality. Captures the essence of an odd style, the Belgian Stout.

Bottle. Pours with a near black body, medium size retentive off brown, tan head. Aromas of licorice, marshmallow and milk chocolate, estery, dried raisins, chalky roast, mild oak and maple. Fudge. Flavors are woody, chalky, roasted nuts, bitter and ashy roast, char, barrel, mildly thin, tobacco, nutty. Mild yeast. Rustic. Honestly a bit bland and light on barrel. Quite dry, roasty, nutty coffee, medium-low body. Fuller carbonation

Bomber poured into my Smuttynose Big Beer snifter. Pours very dark brown color with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, Belgian yeast, chocolate, oak, vanilla and some alcohol. Roasted malt flavor with some chocolate, Belgian yeast and some alcohol. The barrel hasn’t really added much and I don’t get much, if any, of the bourbon. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation. Not bad, but I was hoping for much more influence from the bourbon barrels.

Hot grape and prune aroma, weak. Mahogany, medium tan head. Roasty coffee and dark chocolate flavor with plum accents. Bread toast present. Medium body with a coffee finish. Not very sweet, no candi at all, probably overly toasty for the style. A very American take on a Belgian style ale, but delightfully so.

Aroma: Nose of chocolate malts, vanilla, and roast, with hints of Belgian yeast and bourbon
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with a small tan head
Flavor: It has lots of chocolate/malts, with the yeasty and bourbon flavors noticeable, but subtle
Palate: The body was a little lighter then I expected, it feels creamy and smooth
Overall Impression: Randomly, this was the first thing I drank blind out of all the beers there. Anyway, I was plenty happy to start with this one, as I thought it was quite good. A nice job by Smutty.

Bottle at ChrisO Holiday Tasting, London - thanks to The Peter’s mother-in-law (Myrna?). Pours dark brown with a fine, tan cream head. Dark bread malt nose, hints of Belgian candi sugar, dry cocoa. Medium to strong sweet flavor, some light dry cocoa, candi sugar, rich toast, light smoke, roasted malts. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with moderate earthy bitterness, dry cocoa, toasty sugars, brown sugar, rich dark bread. Very tasty, nice bitterness offsets the dark sugars. Great balance overall. I loves the Smuttynose.
