Belgian Style Stout
Named in honor of the doggy denizens of Brussels, this hybrid beer is a mix of what we love best in a big, roasty stout, but fermented with a Belgian yeast, which brings out a beautiful, fruity nose.
This relatively new sub-style combines Belgian, American and English influences to create a beer whose total is more than equal to the sum of its parts. Here’s how Zinneke breaks down and adds back up. Start with a strong stout. This is the Big Beer Series after all… then “Belgianize” it by altering the grain bill and fermenting the wort with a Trappist yeast strain. We backed off the heavy caramel and roasted malts to create a more complimentary flavor profile for the yeast, which contributes fruity esters and a light body. These parts combine to create a beer with dark color and light body with prevalent flavors of dark fruits, vanilla and toffee, while subtle chocolate flavors appear in the finish.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 01/03/2013. Deep dark brown color with a minimal tan head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing. Aroma of coffee and fruit. Medium body with flavors of chocolate malt, coffee and berries. The finish is roasty with a short malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle at ChrisO tasting, thanks to Peter and his mother in law Myrna, 30/12/12. Hazed dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that clears to the edge. Nose carries dark malts, dark fruits, wood, spice, booze. Taste comprises dark malt, bread, rye, spice, wood notes, dark fruits and sugars. Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a bitter dry finish. Decent.

Draft @ the Ale House, Amesbury, MA. Tulip glass shows a deep black with lasting tan head. Nose is chocolate, yeast and raisin notes. The taste is a Belgian stout without question. I get only very light notes that this was aged in bourbon barrels. As I sip this I can’t detect any ABV. Just lots of sweet flavors. Chocolate, coffee, raisins, plums and yeast. Texture is on the creamy side. My glass was empty much too quick. Overall this is my kind of brew. And the best thing is the price on draft and in a bottle is very reasonable.

Rating number 2600! 10oz pour at Churchkey DC is an oily, opaque black with one ring of creamy, off white head. Nose is malty, caramel, burnt sugar, vanilla, light wood. Flavor is sweet, vanilla, caramel, toast, burnt candy sugar. Full, sweet finish.

Draft at Churchkey. Poured a dark, black color with a light brown color. Aroma is some sweet roasted notes, with some chocolate, cocoa, touch of some earthy spice notes. Flavor is come chocolate, caramel, some light vanilla, roast, some cherry character. Pretty enjoyable.
