The Bier Baron, DC tap ($5): Pours a red body with a whitish head. Aroma is citrus with a bit of Belgian yeast and some grass, with very little malt. Taste is nicely bitter, with very flavourful hop character. It is pretty easy to drink because of the nice body. No sweetness. Tastes like a DIPA with a twist. Didn’t think it was too experimental though.

Draft at Churchkey. Poured a slightly hazy orange color with a wispy, off-white head. Aroma was a bit dank, with some sweet notes and a solid amount of yeast character in this one. Some fruit notes, with some yeast dominate the flavor. Alcohol is a bit boozy on this one, despite being only 7.3%. Okay - but not my favorite from them.

Growler from DC Brau. Pours a translucent garnet amber with some creamy, slight off white head. First go at the nose and it smells like Juicy Fruit bubble gum, tropical fruits, oranges, candy sugar, a little caramel, cherry candies. Flavor is a little maltier, Belgian candy sugar, some orange, some grapefruit candy, a little melon, cherry, light malt. Medium bodied, lightly sweet finish. Not sure how I would describe a standard West Coast Red Ale, maybe this is it. I liked this. Unique, drinkable, a little festive.

Draft. Murky variegated brown color, tan head, amazing lacing. Nice aroma of grass and subtle licorice. Taste starts sweet, then citrus and summer fruit with a bitter finish. A successful experiment, I’d say.
