Rich and smooth, AleWerks Porter is a traditional example from colonial times. A seven malt backbone is balanced with Fuggles hops. Sit back and relax after dinner with a pint.
English Porter was first brewed, around 1720. It quickly became the beer of choice in England, Ireland and Scotland where it was brewed in ever increasing quantity. It remained popular well into the 1800’s.
Brewer Robert Hare of Philadelphia produced the first commercial porter in America (1776). After the war, his porter was in great demand, buoyed no doubt by President Washington’s 1789 “Buy American” policy and his pronouncement that he would drink only porter made in America. Much of this porter came from Hare’s brewery, and some from that of Ruben Haines.

Chevy Chase, DC 12oz ($2.29): Pours a black with a creamy looking head. Aroma is chocolate and roasted malts, with a hint of coffee. Taste is mostly milk chocolate. Drinking this beer is like drinking some cold chocolate. It even tastes good in 80 degree weather. I suppose this is my weird fascination with summer porters.

12oz bottle. Deep opaque brown black. Lacy beige head. Some roasty chocolate coffee aroma. Well done, nails the style. Slightly oily chocolate tones, some fruity tones hidden underneath. Subtle, delicate hop balance. Has maybe just a hint of honey sweetness. On the lighter side of medium bodied, refreshing and certainly very sessionable. Solid offering.

I would dispute the claim that this porter bears any real resemblance to an 18th century example, but it’s a solid enough beer, on its own. Roasty with a mix chocolate and cola flavors. It’s not as rich as better examples. Ashy feel with a mild tang. More roast bitterness than hop. Cola aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit fizzy. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a beige head. It’s an ok porter.

Pours dark and thick with nearly no head. Nice roasted bitterness, light malt sweetness, some chocolate, light earth in the aroma. Flavor has a nice roasted malt/coffee start. Bittersweet, lightly burnt malts, a touch of sour, and light cocoa. FInish is bitter and roasted. A bit thin in the palate. Nice porter.

Classic porter nose with elements of chocolate, caramel, hints of roast and coffee. Flavor is medium bodied and caramel sweet with some chocolate and a finish reminiscent of coffee liqueur. Semi-sweet finish. Dark brown, near opaque with a nice creamy fine-bubbled head. Really solid.

Overall Impression: No notes to speak of from a rating that is about 2 years old (I'm thinking I got it at Total Wine in Richmond)...I'll insert the score though, and should I drink this beer again I'll be sure to update.
