Rich and smooth, AleWerks Porter is a traditional example from colonial times. A seven malt backbone is balanced with Fuggles hops. Sit back and relax after dinner with a pint.
English Porter was first brewed, around 1720. It quickly became the beer of choice in England, Ireland and Scotland where it was brewed in ever increasing quantity. It remained popular well into the 1800’s.
Brewer Robert Hare of Philadelphia produced the first commercial porter in America (1776). After the war, his porter was in great demand, buoyed no doubt by President Washington’s 1789 “Buy American” policy and his pronouncement that he would drink only porter made in America. Much of this porter came from Hare’s brewery, and some from that of Ruben Haines.

Bottle from Butters. Black opaque pour with a huge gushy tan head. Cocoa powder and bitter chocolate aroma with a touch of burnt malt. The flavor is reminiscent of cocoa mix right from the Hershey’s can. A touch of bitterness brings on the dry finish.

Deep dark brown coloured body, 75% opaque, with a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of roasted malt, strong nuts, a bit of coffee and even a slight kick of hops. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty flavours in the taste with a good prune and pit fruit taste, along with some light chocolate and coffee tastes. Aftertaste shows more of the same - a good roastiness throughout. Overall, a good porter - once again, nice to try! I sampled this beer on draught as a sampler at the Shirlington Oktoberfest in Arlington, Virginia on 07 October 2006.

Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Very dark brown color with a significant tan head. Interesting aromas of coffee, nuts, dark toasted malt and chocolate. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is a tad sour, with chocolate, coffee and dark malt. Finish is rather dry and has a very slight sour note. Rich and tasty porter.

Rerate, 10/8/10, from the post-infection days, so this one is certainly due for rerating. 12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized brown frothy head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel and smoke. The taste is chocolate, roasted malts, oats and a bit of smoke and coffee in the finish. Very mild hops. Medium bodied. Pretty good beer. 7/4/8/4/15/3.8

Old Rating 1/7/08, 5/3/6/4/12/3.0. Bottle. Pours nearly-jet black with thin head. Roasty, nutty aroma. Very strong taste of caramel. A little too sour, but not bad.

Roasted chestnut, charred oak, hearty, and hoppy aroma. Excellent balance. Black pour with a slow buikling medium tan head. Very nutty and dirty, walnut, chestnut, and bark with a charred quality. Dirty palate. Really unique and earthy. A good segue between a porter and an ABA. With a few more hops this could be perfect.

12oz bottle. This beer surpised me. Dark brown, good head. Very nice roasty aroma. Flavors of chocolate, with great roasted undertones.
