Sample at the Willoughby PBCCP tasting on 11/17/2013: The beer pours a clear orange-copper color with a medium foamy off-white head that diminishes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, malt and caramel. Medium-bodied and slightly syrupy with flavors of resiny hops, earthy malt and grain. The finish is moderately bitter with a piney hops aftertaste. Hard to believe this is double digit ABV Double IPA the way it drinks. Slightly above average overall.

Tap. Pours clear light amber with a large off-white head and nice lacing. Aroma is floral, pine, caramel. Flavor is about the same, lightly sweet, lightly bitter with bitterness increasing to the finish. Medium body, creamy in the mouth. Not a bad beer at all, and masks its ABV well.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Norm's, 6/15/12

Aroma: The nose has some malts, bread/toast, caramel, toffee, orange fruity notes, and spice
Appearance: It pours an unclear dark orange color with a small off-white head and minimal lace
Flavor: The taste is medium sweet, with a lot of malts, breads, and spice, and not a lot of hoppy goodness
Palate: It is medium-full bodied, with a thick feel, a sticky/syrupy texture, and a slightly hot/alcoholic finish
Overall Impression: I certainly wouldn't have classified this beer as a Double IPA. It is missing all that resiny/pine/citrus sweet-hoppy goodness that makes this style so wonderful. Anyway, this wasn't a bad beer by any means, but it just wasn't rounded out at all either. I don't know. I changed my mind on this one multiple times as I was drinking it. I'm not going to hold the style category against it, since I certainly don't know that is the style they were attempting for, and my assumption is that they were not. It felt much more like a British style Barleywine (well not exactly, but something of that nature).
