Coffee notes? Check. Porter notes? Check. A coffee beer that any brewer could make? Better check again. This is VJP – an easygoing dark beer with the makings of both a sweet-vanilla coffee house java and a smoky English style porter. Despite its looking every bit as black as a regular dark roast Joe, it goes down like it’s frothy with cream and sugar. Sip and ‘ahhh.’

Bottle @ home via a trade. Deep brown appearance with a small tan head. Boozy, raisin, slight chocolate, watery vanilla aroma. Tangy, somewhat sour, burnt malty, thin bodied, light vanilla flavor. Seems infected to me. Absolutely abhorrent. Definitely infected. Barf!

very vegetal, refried beans aroma. Opaque cola colored, headless. Watery mouthfeel. Artificial vanilla flavor, which is actually nice, but the base beer is rather suspect. Finishes with a resurgence of refried beans and coffice.

8/29/2009 Pours a solid dark brown with a bubbly beige head. Smells of milk chocolate, a bit of vanilla, slightly acridic aroma. Slight coffee and a touch of alcohol. Taste is creamy chocolate, slight coffee, very smooth taste is a bit unexciting. Creamy bordering on watery mouthfeel, Light carbonation, medium body. This one was okay. It was the best of the three that I bought from Atwater, but only okay compared to others of the style.

0.33L bottle, smallish head that dissapears quite quickly, medium dark brown colour with some reddish hues, flavourfull aroma of chocolate liquor, brown sugar and rum, flavour of light roasted coffee with some vanila and green vegetables, medium to light body, light sweetish coffee aftertaste. Light but quite tasty.

Very vanilla and strong carbonated mouthfeel. Aroma of coffee and vanilla. I don’t like flavor that is added. Why not BREW vanilla beans in the porter, rather then adding extract??? Not terrible but I’m glad I bought a single bottle. I wouldn’t buy again. You have to like vanilla extract or it gets to be a bit much if you drink more then one.

This looked appealing when I picked it up from a local liquor store. However, looks can be deceiving. Appearance a very dark brown with a thin and quickly dissipating head...not a good sign when you’re expecting to drink something that’s relatively creamy. Aroma mostly nutty with a faint amount of vanilla and coffee in there. Taste is pretty thin, decent mouth feel, has a weird aftertaste of vanilla extract. Wouldn’t purchase again, but good enough to finish this one 12 oz bottle.

12 fl oz bottle, courtesy of fiulijn. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is initially cherry and slowly an appearing cherry note. Flat coffee and dark malty. Coffee and dark roasted to malty. Rather flat and with a slight dark malty note. Quite vanilla flavoured too. Subdued acidic and dark malty into a rather dry finish.

The color is very dark, almost black; small head. The aroma is not very interesting: light sourness, dirty water, dust, paper, coffee; confusing. Light body; cheap vanilla and coffee flavor, mild, with limited roastiness. Low bitterness, some from the roasted malts. Not very good.

Draft at The Strutt. Cola coloured, no head. Aroma of vanilla, sweet malted. Flavour of light roasted malts, vanilla and a bit of coffee. Way too sweet, and lacking carbonation.

Very disappointed in this one. Pours black with dissipating mocha head. Mocha and Vanilla bean coffee aroma. Flavor is similar but surprisingly not all that satisfying. I’ve had better in this genre. Rated on 11/1/08
