Coffee notes? Check. Porter notes? Check. A coffee beer that any brewer could make? Better check again. This is VJP – an easygoing dark beer with the makings of both a sweet-vanilla coffee house java and a smoky English style porter. Despite its looking every bit as black as a regular dark roast Joe, it goes down like it’s frothy with cream and sugar. Sip and ‘ahhh.’

12 ounce bottle from my friend Eric, and nothernbrews also sent me one. Thanks guys! Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of big cocoa notes, mild coffee, vanilla and roast. The taste is tootsie rolls, cocoa, vanilla, toasted notes, herbal hops, coffee. Thin bodied. Decent.

Bottle. Faint caramel malt, some light coffee and chocolate aroma. Reminds me more of a roasty amber than a porter. Dark brown with a small tan head. Sweet roasty malt, metallic vanilla, and light ash flavor. Light carbonated body. Generally, thin watery flavor.

A deep dark porter with a thick brown head. In aroma, a rather strange and herbaceous black olive aroma. In mouth, a rather bad mix of cocoa powder and black olive brown, salty, plain bad.

Tried to rate this as objectively as possible. Picked up the bottle because I had never heard of the brewer before, andi love porter, but this was pretty pathetic. Poured ok, but not a lot of head, smell is vanilla bean, a little chocolate, some roasted malts, taste however, is lame, no big flavors, everything is muddled together, not terrible, not a drain pour by any means, just disappointing.
