Coffee notes? Check. Porter notes? Check. A coffee beer that any brewer could make? Better check again. This is VJP – an easygoing dark beer with the makings of both a sweet-vanilla coffee house java and a smoky English style porter. Despite its looking every bit as black as a regular dark roast Joe, it goes down like it’s frothy with cream and sugar. Sip and ‘ahhh.’

Draught @ NYC Craft Beer Festival. Dark brown with slight reddish tint, very small off-white foamy head, slight coffee aroma, medium carbonation, coffee taste with vanilla flavor in the background, long bitter finish. A good brew!

Dark brown to lack 1 finger coffee colored head. aroma is straight up vanilla with sweet and roasted aromas. Sweet finish, up front, some chalky coffee tastes.Stale taste but vanilla is redeeming.

12oz bottle picked up at Old Town in Louisville. Poured into a shaker pint. Jet black color with huge soapy tan head. Vanilla extract on the nose with a hint of coffee: burned. A little too sweet on the palate and a heavy finish. Burned coffe taste separates from the sweetness, not too pleasant.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled in 10/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, brown bread, vanilla, light nuttiness, light herbal, and toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and coffee/vanilla spice notes; with decent strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, toast, brown bread, light nuttiness, light herbal, and toasted earthiness. Light coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, toast, brown bread, light nuttiness, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good complexity and solid robustness of dark/roasted malt and vanilla/coffee spice flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very solid spiced porter style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roasted malt and vanilla/coffee spice flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

This porter poured a deep black colour with a rocky, tan coloured head. Scents include vanilla, caramel and a little coffee. First swig had a little watery mouthfeel but the flavour of vanilla, cocoa, coffee and roast made up for that. Finish is roasty and sweet with roasted vanilla flavours lingering.

Tap at tap house Munich. Black, low brown head. Milk chocolate nose. Vanilla, coffee, roast, brown sugar flavor. Light body, mellow mouthfeel. Feels fresh despite the desert flavors.

Bottle poured into a shaker. Pours black with minimal dark brown head. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate and vanilla. Taste is light sweet and light bitter. Vanilla dominates the start with coffee in the middle and finishing with some dark chocolate. Full bodied with a somewhat creamy texture. Somewhat fizzy carbonation and a very long finish. Great beer overall. I would love to try this super fresh though.
