The Duck-Rabbit Hoppy Bunny American Black Ale is both intensely hoppy and intensely black! Eight separate hop additions offer delicious bitterness and beguiling hop aroma/flavor. Heavily represented among these hops are Chinook, which provides deep pine and sticky citrus components, and a New Zealand hop called Motueka, from which we get bright fruit and spearmint notes.

12oz bottle. Opaque brown-black, steady glass lacing beige head. Really pleasant aroma, just what you’d want/expect from a BIPA. Despite the rich minty hops and chocolate, this beer is quite clean and balanced. Really nails it, surprisingly not sticky or underattenuated. Really good stuff.

Chocolate and pine nose, soil also present. Mahogany, thick tan head, nice lacing. Resinous pine within a licorice base, not at all sweet. Subtle smoky finish. Medium body, soft carbonation. I generally prefer more of a citrus quality in IDAs, but this was quite nice. Great intensity of flavor.

Draft at NOVA BrewFest. Poured a near pitch black color, plenty of dark ruby notes. Aroma was roasted malts, chocolate notes, touch of solid hop notes. Flavor was creamy chocolate malts, notes of hops. Very good!

12oz bottle I picked up at Norm’s in Vienna. Cascadian Dark Ale all the way. Pours an opaque black with a creamy, lacing, beige head. Herbal, citrus nose, a little dried basil, some lemon, dried leaves, dried hop bines, floral, some chocolate easter eggs. Flavor is malty, licorice, crackers, toast, milk chocolate, some citrus, grapefruit, lemon. Full bodied, dry, astringent finish. More malt forward. Needed more of a big, American hop presence to truly ring as a Black IPA.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run. Pours a very dark brown color with a large dark brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of big roasted malt and big chocolate notes with a spicy, resin hop finish. The taste is roasted hops, chocolate and bitter, slightly astringent hops. Medium bodied. Decent.

Chevy Chase, DC 12oz: Pours a black color with a light brown head. Aroma is fruity, citrusy hops and a light roasted malt backbone. Taste is much the same. The IPA runs circles around the porter in this one. The hop flavour is crisp and fruity. The black provides a canvas upon which the hops paint. Slight roasted malt. Easy drinking. Well-balanced.
